He was before my time, but was this quote from a newspaper article during his playing days actually him or someone else? "My Saturday night ends late on Sunday morning - it's devoted exclusively to birds and booze."

All long haired loverboy footballers in the 70's were playboys and when it started to recede they took over a pub.

Back in the 70s players personal lives didn't receive the same scrutiny and prurient interest that they do now - George Best perhaps being an exception.

Footballers weren't expected to be saints and confirm to some purist ideal. If they were seen out boozing and womanising, with a cigar in their mouth, it wasn't news. I doubt if Mel Blyth was any different from any other footballer of the time who fancied himself with the ladies.
