Would be happy with this as long we can afford to sign a proven striker as well. Players like Jedinak or Campbell/Gayle may have to leave to make it happen

If we were to sell Jedinak that would be a big loss. We would be swopping a defensive midfielder with an attacking midfielder in Shelvey, and unbalancing the squad in that we would leave only Ledley as DM cover

Surely Shelvey would only be considered if we let, say, Jedinak or Ledley leave in January.

Given that he naturally plays much further forward I doubt it. Part of the problem at Swansea seems to be that he has been playing far deeper than normal. It does not seem to suit him at all.

If we were to buy him I would hope he would be played in Punch or Chamakh's position.

Palace don't need Shelvey. They need to use McArthur, Ledley, and Jedinak in the holding midfield role and move Cabaye up to #10. Then you'd have Punch as a sub, able to fill in at wing or replace Cabaye in the middle. Either way, we have depth with defensive minded midfielders, so move Cabaye up. I always thought that's what we paid for, not for him to sit in the holding midfield role.

Edited by PalaceJam (01 Jan 2016 6.06am)

But that's not Cabaye's best position, which is why Puncheon and Mutch play there.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Petereagle how did you copy my quote into the comment like that? Apologies I'm new to all this!

I agree he would be a big loss, not only for him being a solid defensive midfielder, but he's also a massive leader for the team. I only mentioned his name because I believe he was close to going to Stoke in the summer but he declined the transfer (I think).

Saying that, Cabaye, MacArthur and Ledley are all good at defending and work bloody hard, and are so much more comfortable on the ball than Jedinak. I also remember Joel Ward doing a solid job in midfield last season a few times so he could fill in if we become unlucky with injuries again.

I reckon Shelvey would do a job either in CM or just off the striker as he's got a decent shot and range of passing. Roy seems to like him at England as well.

I don't know what others thought, but Jedinak disappointed me against Chelsea. He seemed really pedestrian and off the pace.He wasn't the Jedinak of old.I wouldn't be surprised if he is sold in the 'Window'.

Don't worry Petereagle i figured out the quote thing!

There was a time when MacArthur kicked it out for a throw in the first half. Granted it was a s*** ball, but Jedinak was hiding behind a Chelsea player not looking to help him. If Cabaye was there with him, we would have been able to play our way out of that one.

Jedinak obviously one all of his headers, but he looked nervous on the ball and off the pace as you said Willo. Maybe if he'd been playing more games it might have been different, who knows

I would be. I think it will be the summer, unless we get a good offer for him. Even then, if the rumours about Stoke making a bid last year are true, it is up to him if he goes, much like it was up to Murray to accept or reject an offer from another club.

Yes possibly.
He just wasn't the Jedinak we know and he seemed to struggle at times. Maybe with more appearances he will get back to the player we know.

This could be one hell of a New Year - for once I agree with a Willo post! - haha.

However, I think we have seen the best of Mile and I will be eternally grateful for everything he has done for us. However, the truth be told, he was always a bottom half of this league defensive midfielder due primarily to his lack of passing ability.

Let him have one last big payday in the Premier League or maybe overseas (China?) - he deserves that. I bet he never imagined such riches when he joined us those few years back.
