A new leader will be chosen who won't get any better deal from the EU than Mrs May has done so we're back to "no deal"

She will swap places with Hodgson.

Meanwhile we are told we won't need a visa to travel to the EU but we will need something called an ETIAS which involves payment, checks to see that you aren't this that or the other and an application process.

Could someone explain how that isn't the same thing as a visa FFS?

You may well be correct. However Mrs May has lost all credibility with the EU she is like the wife who threatens to leave her husband but never does so after a while you ignore her.

If we get a new leader it depends on who they are. It won't be JRM but if someone like him said to the EU we are leaving I think they would believe him, that might just tips the scales into them offering a better deal and if they didn't well we would be leaving.

None of the options I outlined are particularly palatable so it is now the best of a bad bunch.

This is being introduced in a few years time for all countries who get visa free travel to the EU, it's nothing to do with leaving.

And it's a belated retaliation to the USA introducing ESTAs. It's a pure revenue raiser, like APD is.

Really I think it applies in the case of no deal Brexit, so 29th March 2019.

Or as soon a freedom of movement ends.

It has everything to do with leaving, being in the EU it just doesn't apply to us.

Nothing to do with no deal and it isn't scheduled to start until 2021.

As Stuk says its a revenue earner like ESTA. The difference between that and a visa is that you can still be turned away at the border even though you have a valid ESTA. All you have really done is provide your personal details in a single format to a single system. If they need to check you out is is easier to do this way then contacting airlines for data.

I assume they do some basic checks like are you on a watch list but last time I applied for an ESTA it was granted in minutes so they could not have done a thorough check.

I have no problem with the EU doing this as long as we reciprocate to their citizens. And if this is the price we have to pay to control our own country well I can live with that.

It's basically the same as the little green form you used to fill out, for free, on the plane where you self certify that you aren't a nutter, terrorist, criminal, spy, on drugs etc. Nothing actually gets checked and this will be no different.

As you say, expect one to apply in reverse in the near future.

Except it will probably cost £10-£15 to fill it in!
