This story has been in several papers for the last few days. Sorry I have little sympathy the media is blowing this out of proportion.

If you want to stay longer simply apply for a visa. I have friends who live in the EU the process may vary by country but at the end of the day it's still a visa / residency process.

Yet again it's the EU playing hard ball as EU citizens can live here for 6 months.

Exactly. A friend moved to Italy last year and applied and got residency it took a while and cost a few thousand unlike our free visa process but that's the wonderful EU for you.

Seems like the main sticking point is currently over fishing rights in UK waters.

The EU wants to be able to fish in them. They have said if they do, 20% of each catch with go to the UK.

The UK has said that we want a minimum of 60% from each catch.

Ireland are coming up with a feable line that the fish don't recognise boarders. Unfortunately for them the Royal Navy do.

It seems like some in the European Union still don't really get that the UK is no longer a part of it, and this is clear overreach. Demanding access to British waters as part of a deal will weaken the EU's argument onto the Internal Market Bill - you cant take the high ground if you are making an attempt to snatch other counties territory.

France are threatening to veto this, however, most countries that can't access our waters see this as trivial and not a reason to scupper a deal.

Meanwhile in Europe, Austria and non-EU state Switzerland have refused to bow to EU pressure to close their Ski Resorts. In another clear overreach on sovereignty from the EU.

The UK has announced its immigration rules, which are probably a lot more lax that many UKIP types would like, earn £25k+ a year and be able to speak English. With excepts for some industries. Its probably going to be difficult for the EU to argue against and cause many EU nations to get a bit jealous.

Brussels is still banging on about a level playing field, state aid, and regulation, again not understanding that the UK is no longer part of the EU. The smaller countries don't want Ireland to get a comparative advantage, whilst Ireland are pleading to be the innocent party and hoping to get some concessions. Other countries don't see this as a reason to scupper a deal.

It seems like the good old British divide an conquer tactic could be quietly working well. Whilst concession is needed the EU needs to get 27 countries to agree on something. They've already got stressed internal relations due to Covid and the UK has worked the situation to gain some leverage where there was previously very little available.

And Poland and Hungary are already causing the EU problems and holding up the bailout. As you say those countries not bothered about fishing most be quite frustrated with France.

I would offer the EU a sliding scale say over 5 years

Year 1 the EU has same as now but there after decreasing each year. If in 5 years the British fleet has not expanded or fully taken up their increasing quota then I would be happy to allow the EU to do so in a new deal.

Or Macron can explain to the French fishermen why they have no access to our waters.
