I have been going to Camber Sands for over 60 years. One of my aunts owned one of the cottages right on the beach (Marine Cottages) and, for a while, The Green Owl Hotel. I've been there hundreds of times and it is one of the safest beaches anywhere. Because of the shallow slope of the beach, the tide does go out a very long way and comes in relatively quickly, but at a lot less than walking pace. You can wade out a hundred yards and the water won't be up to your waist. One person could get into trouble anywhere if they swim out far enough, but five adults, when the tide was coming in, on a calm day with little wind, with no one claiming to have seen any of them on the beach beforehand, with no belongings left on the beach, and no ID on any of them? The 'fully dressed' report seems to actually be 'wearing shorts and shirts'. Does anyone go swimming, and we'd have to be talking serious swimming here, not having a paddle, dressed like that? Would five people do that? Edit: Based on link above it would appear that five people would be stupid enough, if the police have now got the story right. Edited by bexleydave (25 Aug 2016 10.47am)

My guess would be that they couldn't swim and the flat calm water they entered gave them a false sense of security.

Visited Camber Sands at start of August: beautiful stretch of sandy beach but packed with swimming very popular with the tourists. Hidden danger without doubt is the threat of riptides with no evidence of lifeguards etc nearby. Too many folk just blithely far out off the beach in the sea swimming and not recognising potential danger.

News now confirming that deaths at Camber Sands were caused by falling into sandbars whilst tide had markedly increased force.

I go sea fishing alot and if your going off the bottom (not wreck fishing) weaver fish are plentiful this time of year. It's the lesser Weaver fish that's the b******, get stung with one of them and you'll want to cut your foot off. Thankfully it's normally the normal variety around our waters. I did pull one out the oggin once, cut my line fcuk that.

You get people that work on boats who not only can't swim, they're actually afraid of the water altogether. In Sri Lanka it's a much bigger problem for women as it's not generally accepted for them to wear swimsuits. So they either don't learn at all or just go in the shallows fully dressed.
