Noss Mayo, Devon is like a cross between The Wicker Man and Deliverance. The only place I've ever been where the pub does actually go silent when a stranger walks in. Very pretty place, but menacing. It would appear that they don't take well to outsiders.

I work in Brighton, it's an absolute sh*t hole. They seem to pay some attention to tarting up the routes that tourists are likely to go, but you only have to go one block over (it is quite like an American grid system in a very small scale way) and there is p*ss sh*t and rubbish everywhere. I guess when you have a homeless problem spiralling out of control and a large number of seagulls chewing through the rubbish, it's really hard to keep the place nice.

The only reason I didn't mention it already is because I don't think it's an inoffensive place to begin with. It's a very dirty, grubby place that seems to place pretentious bohemian lifestyles above cleanliness.

I do think for a day out it is likely folks would have a good day, don't get me wrong, but actually walking around it every day and it's pretty awful.

And yeah, I agree, everywhere could say the same, I think it irks me though that the people of Brighton seem to walk around with their heads held high like they live in some kind of seaside paradise. I honestly don't think it's any better than Croydon. In fact, I've said it before, the people in Croydon are generally more polite. If I walk around the shops for a couple of hours in both venues I guarantee I'll encounter better manners in Croydon than in Brighton. But the people I know in Brighton seem to look down their nose at Croydon (hence me making the comparison).

I lived in Basingstoke for over 20 years and loved the place. My firm had an office there and I moved for the job. Two years later they closed it down and moved the jobs back to London so I ended up commuting again.

Had a lot going for the town. Two theatres, great leisure centre, new museum, "Ballons over Basingstoke" event in August, county cricket ground, football team etc.

The location was good to get to the south coast, Southsea/ Portsmouth, SW and the Midlands. At one time, it was considered as the location for the original Wimbledon FC at a new stadium alongside the M3.

For $hiteholes look no farther than Croydon and Sutton town centre. What have they done to them?

Well it's not perfect. Very lacking in amenities and decent shopping, but the River Retail plans in the offing to totally revamp the shopping centre might make a big difference to the town. It has to happen first though...
