Radio 5 were talking about poetry in songs yesterday morning and asked for listeners to ring in with poetic extracts from songs and the first one in was "John Kettley is a weatherman and so is Michael Fish"

Agreed that poetry and song lyrics are different things, but both are writing. Song lyrics are perhaps the medium of our times and speak to many more people than contemporary poetry. So pleased that Dylan got the Nobel Prize and that the Nobel Committee have had the guts to move with the times. Yes, he's recorded some trash in his time but his greatest songs are hard and bitter and uncompromising and completely original. Head and shoulders above anyone else. A great writer.

Definitely deserved - whilst some of Dylan's works are more traditional song writing, it the best, like the afore mentioned desolation row transcend the form - and are arguably far closer to poetry. And in most of Dylan (and Leonard Cohen as well) the at the very least its mastery of the lyrical form, which is a form of poetry, and reliant on numerous poetic formats and structuring. Arguably both Dylan and Cohen's contribution to lyrical construction are as important to poetry as music.

I didn't know where to start on the Guardian article about this being just another white bloke getting an award but thankfully my faith in humanity was restored by reading the comments disagreeing. Still, what a fcuking idiot.
