Thanks for all the responses. Some great comments written without biting my head off which is a relief, for sure.

It looks like I'm in a minority of one on this point, doesn't it?

I do agree that Wilf has improved his game over the last couple of seasons and he makes the right choice more often these days, without a doubt.

However, I do stick with my assertion about his defending. Some may well say that he shouldn't be defending, we should concentrate on his strong points.

That's all very well but the game has changed enormously recently and sides are producing teams that press with more intensity when the other team are in possession. With Wilf I feel that it is not enough to simply go to your man and stand in front of them; the presence needs to be more urgent and 'in your face'. These days, once you lose the offensive role, the whole team must assume defensive duties even if your biggest strength is an attacker.

I know that our lad has gained a reputation as one who goes down easily and to some extent I agree. I've become so used to seeing those knitted eyebrows and the constant looking around because it's all so unfair. This is part of his game that he needs to lose, in my opinion.

This young man has talent to burn but I feel he needs to up his profile considerably if he wishes to progress to the next level.

I think your doing Wilf a mis service here. I am more than happy with his overall performance . If he was perfect believe me he wouldn't be with us but with Barcelona or Real Madrid pal. Enjoy what we've got and stop moaning and trying to find small faults and negatives in people doing well. Perhaps you should focus your criticism on Campbell, now where do I start !?

The op is off his tits and don't Chelsea play 3 cbs? Different game. Wilf was poor Saturday but criticising his defensive displays? Talk about his constant going to ground and squabbles with people when going forward instead.

So, 'I'm off my' yet we seem to agree, Rawp. I have mentioned, have I not, his 'sulking' and looking 'hard done by' rather than focusing on his game. This was mentioned alongside his neglect of proper defending. So, all in all, I think you must be 'off your tits' too.

Wilf's overall image should be about his incredible talent but this is being masked by his unprofessional attitude.

I think it does upset him when things aren't going right but he must learn to grow up otherwise his sulking means that he becomes ineffective going forward and defensively.

If you really think that managers are not bothered about focusing on the defensive aspects of attacker, then you are indeed well off your face, mate.

It would also help if you were to read posts properly before casting judgement on my sanity.

For someone not defending he's on the edge of his own penalty area a lot.

Yes, I can think of instances when he's lost his man, but that's just football. It's no different to Dann and Tomkins making errors last week, it just happens.

In general his defensive contributions have been excellent for the last 18 months.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

The problem surely is that he's too deep. In the first half on Saturday we camped in our own half and let them have the ball and tried to catch them on the break.

Agree with the other points but not his defensive commitment..in fact I've seen halves of football where he's won more tackles inside our own third and tracked more players than any of our midfielders or defenders..it is THAT which I relate to my judging of your comments. It is in fact that excellent defensively matured wilf that jeopardises the exciting flair attacking wilf imo...and with it amplifies an already fragile temperament and partialness to a bit of conflict. This all relates to the doubts we have over his attitude, everything seems a personal battle with the lads.

Wilf is not a defender but works hard IMO if we are going to dig him out for poor defending what hope have Kelly and Souare got.

Unfortunately OP this recent article totally punctures your belief by actually naming both our current 1st team wingers in it with WZ seen as the 2nd best in the League no less !

To be honest it surprised me a little too but only because I didn't realise just how much WZ tracked back on a League basis !

So, the problem is maybe not the wingers, but the full backs.
