No I'm not pretending otherwise. Of course that's the case.

I'll think we'll have to agree to differ though. In my view it's their days off. If the company don't have enough drivers then it's the company's fault. The passengers safety on the drivers days off can't possibly be their fault.

Happy to agree to differ. Be a boring place if we all agreed

Correct. Relying on O/T was a deliberate company policy during my employment there.

Can I politely ask then.. why did drivers work the overtime if it was not in their contracts? Presumably to earn extra money (fair enough)but did this not play into the company's hands?

I'd say the benefit is all with the drivers, dont know why you may think it plays into the company's hands? They can work overtime and earn extra but also use it as a bargaining tool and withdraw from working when needed.

The problem for the company is that it is so much cheaper than employing more staff. And in the franchises it's all about profit for the company and is all short term focused. They don't want to train up loads of staff knowing they may lose the franchise in the future.

Yep. Train drivers are in the top 10% of wage earners. It was difficult to get them to work overtime. It seems their goodwill has all but disappeared. We used to get production managers to phone drivers at home and convince them to work. It wasn't easy. If you worked for a s***ty company, would you do them favours?

SeeCorbyn has stated he may join the picket lines! Of course there is no political agenda to this dispute..it's all about safety!!
Didn't see him join the junior doctors on the picket lines..perhaps their Union doesn't donate enough (if any)to the Labour party

I take it Corbyn is not wedded to free movement of people affected by the strike?

You're all wasting your time. None of the pro-strike supporters on here (a couple of whom tell us they know loads about trains and driving them and southern and unions etc but sweet fa about the effect on the travelling public of the action of their heroes as, by their own admission don't commute) will never admit the union might be even slightly wrong.
Look, if it really is about safety - I'd support an all out strike until it's sorted. Safety surely isn't part time. If it's that bad a total walk out until the issues are rectified is the only way to deal with it.
