I'd agree with that, although I remember a preseason interview with Pardew where he said this would be a 'transitional' season; when pressed by the interviewer (may have been Lineker even?!) where would be an acceptable placing he said 15th. So we exceeded Pardew's lower-end target at least!

With Pardew in charge for the rest of the season 15th would have been available only to business-class customers on Porkair flights.

Agreed. Although, 14th is kinda midtable but I take your point.

It's a mid table finish but arguably Watford and Burnley had better seasons because at no point did they look like they'd be going down.

I am more than happy under the management of Sam. I feel a sense of security that I never felt under Pardew. What infuriates me is how close we were to a really decent finish of 8th and I can't help cast my mind back, like others have already said, to Burnley , Hull , Swansea , Watford , Sunderland (H), Swansea (H) when in my opinion we could have and should have gained more (13) points.

I believe Sam has proven himself in one transfer window and trust him to be clever with his summer signings. I'm hoping for Begivic, Ake, Sakho to bolster the back and simply add Defoe to our attacking options.

Roll on 2017/18!

Yes Alex we are safe with Sam. Not sure we're safe under him or we might not get off the ground again. Sam is a pro, as was Pulis. Pardew has a short skill and then it regresses.

I agree with Burnley, but Watford would probably be disappointed; they have been shocking for a while now - once safety was all but assured really - and finished lower than they did last season.

But you're right in another sense... at the very start of the season I might have said '14th isn't great' but, 10 games in, I probably would have said 'snap your bloody hand off for that!' In isolation, 14th is actually fine and basically midtable. But our season does a feel a bit 'meh'. I wonder if beating Man Utd would have changed things? I remember when we made 10th and to do so we had to beat Swansea on the last day (I think?) that just felt great. Sure, 10th was good anyway, but we probably wouldn't have finished much higher than now had we not won. A league of fine margins really. Sure, Hull, Sunderland and Boro were clearly poorer than every one else (a BIG gap between 18th and 17th... bigger than from us to 8th!) but most of the bottom 13 are really not that dissimilar. West Brom supposedly had a great season but only got 4 more points than our 'meh' season. I guess it shows how much is down to context.

It's been a crazy season all round.
We were screwed by Pardew and thankfully Big Sam dug us out of a gaping hole.
The season ended with the gap between 7th & 8th being bigger than the gap between 8th & 17th. Everton are in a mini league all of their own. LOL

Personally I think 14th is a fair finish given all that we went through. What many pundits failed to grasp as they slagged us off was the level of injuries we were dealing with. Had our fitness been better it may have been a different season, so here's hoping for Big Sam's revolution.

My only grumble is that there were too many games in which we simply lacked passion and desire and that is not acceptable. If I could change one thing it would be to rid us of that mentality.

Overall I'm happy with survival and 14th.

Generally a very poor season with a couple of highlights in the run in. Big Sam got us out of a real hole but for sure another season like that and we'll not get out of trouble. Saying that I'm not expecting a Big Sam team, if backed by SP, to be in trouble.

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

14th isn't 'basically' mid table. It's bottom third.

Don't kid yourself. We were never in a comfortable place the watfords etc were because of the damage Pardew did. It's like Arsenal fans crowing they finished above Spurs last season yet there was only one team challenging Leicester last season and that was Spurs. Look at Spurs and Arsenal now. We won't go backwards though because Sam is a professional. We will go forwards so we can all relax and hope the squad will get closer to having 20+ players who can actually produce 7+ performances in the premier league every week rather that Mutch etc.
