I think it's a bit harsh to say Fulham seven years ago is Hodgsons only success as a manager. His first managerial job was in 1976 and has achieved a lot on the continent and in international football.
I do agree that he's to old though and appointing him would be short term and disappointing.

Not harsh at all, he had a good career now he should be enjoying his retirement and not dreaming he can manage again in the Premier.

It cannot be a serious consideration starting the season with someone aged 70 for godsake its ridiculous suggestion. You may as well start making a case for Terry Venables.
Hodgson is yesterdays man, he was seriously effected by the England debacle, reference to his success at Fulham is a red herring that was 7 years ago and they lost.
Another so called candidate Glenn Hoddle not managed a club for 11 years for a good reason, he is useless.
My preference would be Chris Hughton done a great job with a crap team.

Yet people liked the idea of Wenger, no matter how fanciful it was.

Fergie was 72 when he won the league for a final time

Hiddink is 70, I doubt many would complain

Where as Villas Boas, Martinez, Di Matteo are all young. The latter having won the CL but would you want them?

We need someone who is good enough irrespective of age

The fact is (and it really is a fact) that Hodgson's record is phenomenal. What he did in Sweden was sensational, winning titles at Halmstad (basically a Leicester City story there) before moving to Malmo where he won shedloads and knocked top European teams out of European competition.

He's manager Inter Milan at a time they were in crisis and steadied the boat and is well liked there.

With Switzerland he took them to 3rd in th FIFA rankings, he made Finland competitive as a nation instead of the whipping boys.

There has been the odd debacle at Blackburn (first season they finished 6th by the way) and Liverpool but his exploits at Fulham and WBA were pretty decent, in fact more than decent in Fulham's case with an appearance in a European final!

Yes, it's fair to say his England performance, particularly in France has stained his reputation immeasurably. However, during qualifying he blitzed it.

Do I want him? At 70 in August I'd say no but only because I like the idea someone will be at the club in 5 years time. Who am I kidding though, that won't happen, it's Palace!

But age aside, to dismiss Hodgson as some sort of bumbling idiot is beyond harsh. His cv wipes the floor with anyone else we've been linked with and he is a Croydon boy. Be worried about long term planning is fair. Write him off for his football credentials is ignorant in the extreme!

Where is this being reported?

Also, there's not been one confirmed candidate interview yet so I can't see there being an announcement imminent anyway.

At last some sense. Too many on here seem to think all the top managers in Europe that are available will jump at the chance of coming to Palace. Maybe we tried Tuchel and he wants a bigger club? Maybe Parish see's him as too much trouble and another likely to walk out and leave us up the creek again?

I think this could work out well for all concerned. He will keep the coaches in place so less changes needed, it will work for a couple of seasons so we can stabalise, and then if we can no longer be a team fighting relegation we can then start to attract a younger up and coming manager from Europe who can take us to the next level.

Give the guy a chance. His record overall is good and we need to support him if he arrives.

Yes long term it is not the best appointment however I'm sure this will be a shorter term plan ie 2 years, by which time we will be ready to look again.

It is a good post, I knew about it all before reading it, but he's still 70.

The England show was diabolical, albeit beating some utter toilet opposition in qualifying, and what's more, I doubt the England players will think about his achievements from before they were all born when he's losing their confidence following head scratching instructions and embarrassing results.

And.....deep breath. Please don't do it SP.

There is no doubting Hodgson's prior record however, football has moved on in recent years & he just doesn't seem to have moved with it.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!
