One player cleaning another's boots at a club is not indicative of their ability. Most youth players coming through the ranks are given tasks like this. I think more than anything it's to ascertain how willing they are to work for their progression within the club. I bet Ronaldo's cleaned the boots of somebody laughably bad along the way. Never indicated this at all.

Ah ok, to be fair my comments were based on a documentary I watched about (I think) the Chelsea youth setup and it was about 15 years ago that I saw it! But I agree, definitely think they should've kept it. Not in a nasty way, but just, as you say, to keep egos in check. I only know because my son's best mate was at Palace since he was 10 but got released last week at 18, he said that it doesn't happen any more.
