Manager of a bar makes a crass but honest comment in an email reply about what type of person would be attracted to their bar if they have a certain type of music and he gets fired.

This is an example of why we have to live in a society that lies and promotes lying yet superficially damns it.

'Progressive' PC culture is about fear and bullying companies and individuals if they break some specific 'moral' code.

It isn't about whether I might agree with the view expressed or not. It's a very effective attack on non violent free speech. It's essentially a form of Darwinism on public views.

Everyone believes that people with alternative views/ways of seeing the world to them should be censored.

PC is really an extension of minority/powerless people and groups attempting to get a fair hearing. Obviously that overspills sometimes, as with life.

On the other side, the alt-right who rail so heavily against political correctness now have a President who is demanding the resignations of journalists who dare to disagree with him. Today I was reading about how Guido Fawkes thinks Jon Snow should be sacked for being a 'pinko'. It's the same type of hand-wringing, but from the other side of the fence.

The big difference is that Jon Snow isn't going to be sacked is he.....I'm all for Guido or 'insert name' here having a view on something but....that's as far as it goes.

'Everyone believes that people with alternative views/ways of seeing the world to them should be censored'.

? Surely this is a typo....Don't you mean 'shouldn't'. If this were true then nothing would ever change...slavery would have never ended and women's suffrage would have never happened.

I certainly don't agree with curtailing the free speech of those who disagree with me.....In fact I'm directly against the repression of free speech.

I don't see PC culture as doing what you suggest. As an encouragement to politeness I see a point....But this isn't what has happened.

It wasn't a typo. I will freely admit that, for example, I don't think Laura Kuenssberg, or Andrew Marr, or Nick Robinson should be allowed to present the news on the BBC because I think their views put in jeopardy the impartiality claims of the Beeb.

Maybe more appropriately for questions about PC, I think Richard Scudamore shouldn't be Prem chairman given that he sent incredibly sexist emails about his secretary. He's still there though, just as John Snow is still at C4 despite numerous right wing pundits calling him a leftie.

After a while you just have to accept all this as a fact of life, that various groups can exercise and wield power at times to get what they want, and at other times they have to accept a bias against them.

I have two issues with people who are really viciously anti-PC. First, they tend to be white men, and if you're a white man and think you're being persecuted, you really need to open your eyes IMO. Second, they tend to focus in on tiny, inconsequential stories like the one you've put up here as evidence for a global conspiracy.

Fact is, you can go to near enough any corner on this earth as a white man and you're treated like a king. Try it as a Muslim woman and you won't be so lucky.

Well, I'm all for him being able to express his views but I think Serial represents some of what I think has regressed society.

Some good intentions...and some simply awful ones but when they hold sway purely insidious results.

Society is becoming weaker and weaker at protecting non violent free speech.

Not sure its Political Correctness here, but public relations. But it appears that he was sacked by his employers.

His response to the organisers isn't very professional, or PR savy, which if your a manager of a business on behalf of someone else, is quite important.

Whilst I'd say its a bit harsh, its a communication in his role as a representative of the business, that he's communicating - and its clearly reflected badly on that business.

Its not free speech - he's acting in his capacity as a representative of the business, so its in a private capacity.

I'm not allowed to use certain words and phrases in my business dealings on behalf of clients because they reflect poorly on the business. Much as I would like to refer to individuals as incompetent c**ts and such, I'm pretty sure if I did, I'd face having my contract terminated.

Isn't that the point though? PC is fine when it comes to the Major issues...but its when its used as a hammer to crack a nut that it gets on peoples wick and undermines the very real issues that you rightly point out.

In this case its essentially its restricting freedom of speech...whether we consider it right or wrong.

Fair points; both

I bet if an email said "We don't play metal because it attracts a lot of sweaty moshers" no one would even flinch. Nonsense. Total nonsense. And trying to analyse it as anything other than nonsense is the reason we're turning into a bunch of walking babies.
