So only democrat states issue welfare checks to black people? Ok. Not a laughable and nonsensical biased argument there at all.

Plenty of poor white people get welfare checks in republican states. Must be a conspiracy.

So in your blinkered world, sitting somewhere in England, you don’t think that any black person has ever been held back from a job or opportunity because of the color of their skin?

Are you black, Penge Eagle? I guess not. White English people trying to opine on matters of race in America makes me chuckle. Maybe that 6 months you spent in LA allowed you to walk in the shoes of an African American brother?

The conservative wish to destroy welfare and the health service here shouldn’t be confused with trying to get people to stand on their own 2 feet.

Your LBJ quote is disputed as you know, but he certainly used the word, as did just about everyone of his age from where he grew up. He was still instrumental in passing civil rights legislation started by JFK.

Damn anyone for giving financial aid to a single black mother working 2 jobs, she should be given a hand up and sorted out with a 3rd job on Sundays to make ends meet.

If you want to see poor people milking the benefits system for all it’s worth, look no further than your own doorstep there in blighty.

The problem I have with this is that economic and societal grievances are not racially unique. Most of the posters here will be descended from indentured serfs and peasants. The same is true in America but white working class people are dismissed as “poor white trash” and “rednecks” while their lifestyle and political choices are derided. It appears that your stock of compassion is severely limited.
The “are you black?” argument is pointless. None of us are professional footballers but have no problem discussing those who are with no understanding of the issues they face.

So you are another who swallows the Trump bs that the current economic upswing in the USA can be credited to him! It has nothing to do with him at all.

Pure meritocracy is the fairest system to judge people by bar none.

As for the 'past discrimination' idea. There are so many holes in that logic that any serious examination of it renders it quickly ridiculous.

The Jews are the most maligned group in history, yet don't require state intervention. East Asians were given no favours either and find themselves at the top of the earnings tree.

Being able to overcome discrimination yourself, or via the collective efforts of a community, is clearly praiseworthy and desirable. It all depends on the circumstances. Some groups can do it. Some groups need help. No-one should ever be rewarded for laziness but everyone should, so far as is possible, be able to compete on a level playing field. Discrimination and prejudice do exist and to deny it matters is to deny what is obvious. It can be found in many places.

You can argue that it should be ignored as just another hurdle to be overcome, or you can try to make sure that everyone faces the same number of hurdles.

If merit is to be all that matters then removing unfairness is going to help a lot to achieve it.

Really? Nothing? Do all economic decisions take more than three years to have any effect? By that logic any success Obama had was down to the genius of George Bush.

Obama was POTUS for 8 years and he inherited a struggling economy from Bush.

Trump has been POTUS for 2 years and he inherited a booming economy from Obama.

Whilst any country's economic performance depends upon much more than just who leads it those simple facts tell you that Trump is lying when claiming credit. The best he can claim is that he hasn't yet messed up what happened under Obama's watch, although in time the increased debt caused by the tax cuts and his trade wars could do just that. That the Fed are refusing to cut interest rates is indicative of their nervousness.

So no, nothing positive at all because of Trump. It's just more snake oil.

This is the same Obama under whose presidency US national debt increased from 6.3 trillion dollars to 14.4 trillion dollars?
That’s a gusher of snake oil.

That really is just spin.

You obviously can't just draw a line between presidents or claim that any administration totally controls economic conditions but the fact is that African American employment is better than it ever was under Obama and everyone's wages are now recovering after plummeting under Obama. The economy is doing very well despite all the ridiculous anti Trump scaremongering.

Again, you either don't understand my point or refuse to acknowledge it.

We were talking about the black community. And the rise in single mothers there is greatest compared to whites (20% to 70%) due to LBJ. It's nowhere near that for whites with welfare and single motherhood with the dependency on government for welfare. That is the point! The link with the Democrats and black votes. You think it's because blacks adopt a "herd mentality" whatever that means.

I lived in Los Angeles for two years. But you said I can't talk about Trump because I live in the UK. Now you say I can't talk about blacks because I am white. But you can, and not me? And tell me, why do you post about Brexit if you live in the US then? Didn't you criticise Hrolf for 'policing' the boards. You sir, are a big hypocrite.

You accuse others of 'whataboutery' yet bring up benefit system in the UK in this post. Hypocrite.

No doubt the next thing you will say is that as it comes from NBC it must be "fake news". Trump would!

Sure on Obama's watch the national debt more than doubled. It was a big recession that needed a big recovery effort.

Trump's actual impact on the national debt won't be known for quite a while yet so any kind of real comparison is impossible. However, it is forecast to rise from the 78% of GDP it is right now to 93% in 10 years time. That's Trump's watch's impact!

That is the analysis of real economists and not that of a narcissistic liar who believes he knows more about everything than anyone else.

As that is the point I have been making I agree with you. What we are seeing is the top of a wave. Trump's impact is not yet being felt, but it will be. It won't be the only reason why the economy will slow down again but his policies are going to accelerate the decline and not moderate it.

The sad thing is that it will likely have to be a Democratic POTUS who inherits this in 2020 and have to try to kick start another recovery. Knowing the way politics works they will then get the blame just as Trump is now taking the credit.
