No one was desperate to impeach him. Many felt they had no other option under the US constitution.

The Democrats never expected it to succeed and said so from the beginning. My understanding is that faced a dilemma. If they declined to impeach they risked a backlash from their own supporters for failing to do their constitutional duty. And duty it was. Pelosi had resisted impeachment for a long time as she feared it could be used against her party. She knew that whilst Trump was guilty of many inappropriate acts the GOP would never vote to impeach him.

I am not so sure that Trump didn't engineer this. It would be typically devious of him.

US politics is nothing like UK politics.

In my opinion it is no longer fit for purpose and depends on interest groups and their ability to fund campaigns to function. This is not government of the people by the people. It's government of the people by the people with the most money.

I think they face huge problems and I see no way to solve them.

Not really. Money helps, obviously, but Hillary outspent Trump (in Florida for example I believe it was 50-1) and still lost.

That is what makes politics so interesting at the moment. Leave was meant to lose, as was Trump. Did not happen despite all the supposed 'experts' telling us it was going to. Still amuses me now to see all the people telling us that Trump would not even win the nomination, let alone make it to the Whitehouse.

Not so Trump. He can present it as a scam, witch hunt etc etc and use it as a diversion to claim he is a victim. The gullibility of some of the US electorate never ceases to amaze me.

His campaign manager is already tweeting exactly that and Trump will "address the nation" tomorrow, no doubt with more of the same.

It's not a partisan matter. It's a systemic matter.

The one thing that I agreed with Trump about was the need to "drain the swamp". Unfortunately he wants to only drain that part of the swap that disagrees with him and replace it with another that operates directly under his control, when it needs to be given back to the people's representatives who are free of any kind of outside influence.
