Good post, plenty of points to play for. Some people on here are such defeatist! Where's our palace spirit gone which got us where we are? When the chips are down, thats when we're meant to do our job as supporters, anyone can be a supporter when your winning every week, that's easy!
Let's show all these idiot pundits and people taking the piss that we can survive!

Oh the spirit will be at the games. I'll be bringing mine. It's when any of our attacks break down or we go a goal down and fail to score again that the spirit dies, and understandably so. We've been fed shyte as fans for 2 seasons running. All avoidable. Money was spent in jan instead of 6 months earlier and the cash for Niasse was ready to be spent on a striker. It was left too late. It's inexcusable, it's likely to fail after we give a few more big shows of support.

Lads, I can understand the negativity after the start we have had, but people giving up and saying we are relegated, really need to look at the table.

We are not trying to catch Man utd or Chelsea's points tally. All we need us to have more points than 3 teams come may.
Swansea are currently in 15th position on 5 points.
Stoke on 5.
Leicestert 4
West Ham 4
Bournemouth 3.

Even if we lose against Man u and Chelsea, there is a very strong chance we will still only be chasing 5 points to get out of the relegation zone ( check the fixtures of the teams above us that I have listed)

Zaha will be back by then and we will be playing the way Hodgson wants us to play.

Beneke's injury could well be a major blessig in disguise. Loftus Cheek has previously played for Chelsea and England as an atttacker in a front 3 and has the skill and power for us to do a job up front.

5 points is absolutely nothing to be chasing after the start we have had and in my humble opinion we will end up staying in this division confortably.

At last a sensible post, all the negativity and doomsayers were beginning to make me believe we were already relegated

I'm sure you meant Wagner, I think a "wanger" is something else altogether.

If he did decide, in a moment of madness, to manage West Ham, wouldn't that improve their chances of staying up and aren't they one of the teams we're trying to get above to survive? I think it's probably best not to rely on what may or may not go on at other clubs to save us and instead concentrate on what we're doing ourselves to avoid the drop.

In Wagner's first season at Huddersfield (He took over after 16 league games), they finished 19th and only won 2 of their last 10 games. In their last 2 games of the season they were beaten 4-0 and 5-1. I suspect many were 'Calling for his head' but they stuck with him and went up the following season.

We're 4 points from safety with 32 games to go. In 2001 we were 4 points from safety with 2 games to go, we stayed up.
Also in 2013/14 the year we got most points since our return to the prem, 24 points came from just 4 teams.
Keep the faith, we'll be ok.

To survive you'll likely need about 38pts, which means you need 1.18 pts per game for the rest of the season.

Around 6pts every 5 games, so either 3 Losses and 2 wins, or 1 win, 3 draws and 2 losses.

That kind of form across a season would return c45pts and see you in c10th position.

I would say if we are 8 points or less adrift of safety after the Chelsea game its doable.
We'd have 30 games to overcome it. That's 3 points better than the 4th bottom team every 10 games. Or 1 and a half every 5. Chipping away at it bit by bit, understanding its a marathon and not a sprint it can definitely be done. But..... We need a goal. We need a good performance and we need something, anything to happen to lift these players. Because right now the way confidence is we cant beat an egg.
On paper our first 11 are good enough to finish mid table. On grass? Right now? we are crap. and only a belligerent attitude and a performance can turn this ship around!

I don’t go for this “we need 40 points” thing. I haven’t looked at the stats but I’m guessing there’s very few seasons where 40 points is required. After these first 8 games we have 30 left and we will need to win 10 or 11 of them so it’s definitely doable. As for Benteke, who cares? He hasn’t scored any goals so far so we could hardly do any worse.

Here's more numbers. Last season Palace got 41 points (to finish 14th) having lost 21 games. We could therefore in theory have lost the first 21 games of last season and still finished 14th.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

It's about 39 actually, possibly 38, but 40 does the job.

34 last season (assuming a GD better than minus 43)

Any premier team who starts the season with one striker and one keeper ok 2 but one hanging on is asking for trouble.
