He hasn't played 90 for some time due to injury but when he did, in a struggling side, he was our best player.

Really?

And even if so, does one game warrant an international call up?

What about the handful of great games Andros has put in... ?

RLC really a better footballer than Andros?

That's it. Lack of interest. Bags of apparent potential but no desire (with a team bottom of the League).

Compare with that other loaned from last season - Sakho.

Would be better for everyone if he stayed with us and trained.

Absurd he's being called up.

Half think its Southgates way of sticking his fingers up at Wilf.

I mean FFS... If ever someone should have had a call up. And now we're throwing caps out to kids when they haven't even a season of pro football under their belt and have done NOTHING in that time.

Stopped watching England a while back and now i know why.

Wait next someone will say we're building for the future....

So basically this lad whos done nothing, has been picked to be the future..

Is this the only football team in the world where you don't have to earn the shirt?

Give me strength....

Sorry for the rant but i just find it ridiculous...

I'm not reading too much into this, I guess Southgate just wants to have a look at him. Seems reasonable given some of the dross England have been coming out with over recent years.

I'm surprised Shelvey never got a call-up.

England are not good at retaining possession and Shelvey is one who looks after the ball and sprays passes about - his distribution is excellent.

I'm sure you're right, its just a friendly and he wants to have a look at some youth.

Still personally i think its wrong to give caps out in such fashion.

Instead of looking at players playing well - such as townsend, he's simply picking up the list of kids who are meant to be future prospects. Yet they actually done nothing yet...

Townsends England future.... OVER.

No surprise really... Shelvey doesn't play for a big club. Why would he get called up.

Completely agree though, England would do well taking a player like him with them next summer.

Shows how much Southgate is just a nodding dog. Yes man to his FA's masters and don't disturb the apple cart which is promoting the big clubs.

Sham....

True, that's why they were very happy when Lallana came along and could keep that possession. I thought we'd see Shelvey with Lallana injured.
A very important factor in Spain's and Germany's successes at world level has been because their players are very good with the ball. English players are faster and stronger, but technical know-how has proven superior. Just look at what midgets like David Silva, Iniesta, Xavi or David Villa have accomplished with the national team.
In Spain, they train the kids since 12-13 years to mostly work with the ball.
You just can't train Nathan Redmond or Michael Antonio the same thing at 25 or 26. I like fast players, but England needs some balance

According to a sky reporter, he will be starting against Germany on Friday. You really don't have to do much to get an England cap these days do you...

That does surprise me somewhat, though. It's not necessarily the case that the best players will get caps; players will be passed over because of politics, team fit, experience in a particular system, etc. Wilf probably didn't fit because he wouldn't have been comfortable with the slow, plodding, pedestrian rubbish that England prefer to play, or more charitably that they didn't want to play quick football on the break. If we were Wales or Scotland any reasonable selection would have to be based on the best players and the best team. But if you're England you can muck about more, I suppose. The French have been doing this for years: they wouldn't select Cantona, for example.

Yeah but he didn't actually do anything then either...

Look this is the highest level of football you can play at, and i just can't see how he's earned that.

Whats it say to Townsend whos clearly been playing better....

Basically it says you're international future is over.

RLC I hope he plays well for us and imagine he'll have a great long future in front of him. But picking him for england after he's had a handful of Prem games, and hasn't performed outstanding in any of them.

Na just stinks of FA shoehorning big club players in to the team. Just like they've done for the last ten years which is why we never win anything...

Don't play the best players play the best NAMES... Is all the FA does.

They assume these lads playing for Chelsea are the future and yet they've DONE NOTHING YET....

Complete joke...

I think everyone agrees that there is big club bias when England pick teams. For the case of Townsend, he should be more annoyed that Lingard get picked over him.

I disagree that RLC didn't do anything. Set up some decent chances that should have been finished and almost stuck us 1-0 up away at City. Granted, last couple of games he's been quiet, he looks lost on the right wing.

But, in Southgate's defence (can't believe I'm saying this), he knows these players from U21 level and there are a lot of injuries to first team players at the moment. We are qualified, and have friendlies against two superb football teams. I think this is as good a time as any to pick these players and see what they can do.

Abraham, RLC and Gomez will probably not be ready for the World Cup this year, but this could give them the confidence in their ability to help them be ready for the Euros in 2020.
