Taking 3,000 is the least we can do given our impact on the clusterf*ck in the Middle East over the past couple of decades.

I see asylum and refugee status as something completely divorced from migration. The UK migration rates are a problem.

In terms of asylum, the number of successful applicants have never exceeded the number of UK citizens leaving the country each year (at its highest its less than a 1 to 5 ratio).

And before people hit the lefty defence, I voted to leave the EU because of the excessive EU migration that was undermining UK citizens.

Even Farage wasn't against Asylum and refugees in terms of the UK accepting them. The only question really should be whether people are genuine in their application (and possibly a rationalisation and proper funding of the application system, and the deportation system).

The UK has never had an asylum or refugee problem in terms of population numbers, and traditionally those granted asylum or refugee status have a history of being very positive in their integration into UK society.

The issue with asylum, apart from security, is that it is a virtually infinite process of increasing numbers.

We cannot wait for a crisis before we make wise decisions. The idea that the planet cannot sustain the population, who will be increasingly stressed by famine, weather and warfare, is one we will have to get used to. We must avoid being the victims of it for as long as possible. We can't save everyone.

And what about the next 3000? And the next and the next?

Nor, to mention a new phrase one hears with ever increasing regularity, "Virtue signalling".

You do hear virtue signalling used a lot- by silly right wingers who cannot grasp that people might actually empathise with others.

As silly as those same right wingers shouting about their opposition to immigration due to 'pressure on public services' nonsense.

What a load of rhetorical and emotive grandstanding and hogwash to boot.

Remember when it was promised the UK would take in 3000 refugee children. Well we've only taken in 300 so far.

Campaigners have lost a court battle to force the Government to take the number of child refugees it promised to under the Dubs Amendment.

No I don't, and nor do you.

Here's a piece (aimed at children) to explain things:

Refugees should be housed in the nearest safe country, which is also likely to be culturally compatible.
We should not take any although I do agree we should divert some of our huge foreign aid budget to supporting the countries such as Turkey which have taken in refugees.
Why have not a single one of the oil rich arab states taken in any of their fellow muslim refugees. Answer: They don't want them there so why should we take them?

Permanently taking in such refugees in large numbers will only import the same problems that the refugees themselves are fleeing from. We have a responsibility to future generations of our own people to keep the country a pleasant and safe place to live and to remain a civilised, peaceful first world secular country.

Responsibility to help fellow humans? Sure, with financial aid but not at the expense of the above things we take for granted.

Nice to see the edict being followed.

OK it was expected.
I still think we should take more in if local authorities say they are prepared for them.

The age of Farage and Trump is truly here judging by the answers from the reasonable right expressed here. You do not need to be socialist to agree with all that nick gusset has written,it saddens me that so many are finding the view of the far right attractive and fail to empathise or attempt to understand the situation of others less fortunate.
