A confession.

I gave some money to the Brighton's fighting fund when it looked like they might be going out of business.

I can't be arsed with hating Brighton.

It's quite a nice town really, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. Their fans are mostly alright. Quite realistic and not glory hunters.

When I cycle back to Selhurst, and I'm making my way on the last leg of the journey through Mitcham and Thornton Heath, it's not difficult to tell the difference between where I grew up and the Garden of Eden.

You're incorrectly associating a football "rivalry" with "hatred". Rivalries are what they are, but they're not personal.

Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing!

I was watching Palace play long before the Brighton rivalry started. Millwall was our local derby back then, and Charlton.Strangely, as a young lad, me and a friend, who was also a Palace fan, decided to choose a second team to follow ( the sort of thing you do when you are 11 years old). I chose Brighton, probably because I knew the place from numerous day trips there.

I actually ended up moving to Brighton some 40 years ago, and still live very near to the city, and love the place. Inevitably, in that time, I have known many Brighton supporters, and still do, and they have regaled me with their joys and frustrations down the years.

I have quite a lot of respect for a club that almost exited the league in 1997, had its ground sold from under its feet by a couple of crooks, spent 2 seasons in the wilderness of Gillingham, then many seasons at an athletics stadium, but, eventually, found a new permanent home and now a berth in the Premier League.

That's not to say I won't enjoy beating them on Tuesday, but I personally bear them no animosity.

Charlton and Millwall are our derbies. Local games, rivalries for bragging rights in school or work because you share the same area.
The Brighton one, although artificially started, by Brighton in my opinion because they actually didn't have a rival is as bona fide as any of the others you mention. Many don't know of many rivalries unless you happen to support those teams, but it doesn't make them any less real. We're as far apart as Liverpool and Manchester, yet no one questions that one do they? Mainly because it's been rammed down our throats by the press for years. Someone said it's because they've been challenging for the same prizes for years. Really? 70's, 80's Liverpool dominated, Utd nowhere. Since then utd dominated Liverpool nowhere. I don't know anything really about either city, but there's clearly a City, non football rivalry up there already. The only real reason for ours really seems to be that Mullery and Allison really didn't like each other and our first meeting in years on opening day 1974 I think, was marked by a battle on the beach if I remember rightly as big time Palace went down to the coast for the day. After all Brighton has always been SE London's favourite day out down the beach.
As for saying the troubles were exaggerated, not from my point of view. My mate being over 6ft since the age of 14 saved me from many thrown objects with his head, unfortunately for him, inside and outside the ground.
Personally I believe the real faux hatred only goes one way towards us. Yes I want to beat them badly, but hate, no it's a football match.

Born after 1958-ish and a proper Palace fan then 100% Brighton indisputably are our true ferocious rivals and are to this day.

Born before 1958-ish and a proper Palace fan then it is more than likely Millwall but that must be more from a nostalgic perspective as we are way down on their list these days if they are bothered at all.

I think time has diminished the rivalry, but the 70's and 80's was the best time especially at the Goldstone Ground. Also we seemed to be in different divisions after that.

To do them at the Amex in recent times has stoked it up again and it still is the fixture i look forward to the most along with visits to Charlton and Millwall, when they come along.

not true in my experience, they f***ing hate us. They'll sell out both games v us and if you have to talk to one of them (I find speaking very slowly and using hand gestures works well) they consider us their second rival. It's a good local rivalry.

Definitely second place behind West Ham, but anyone who's been to Millwall away will testify to the strength of the rivalry.

Yeah exactly. Have a look on social media, if there's anything about us, it's always a Millwall or Charlton bellend that's giving it the big one. Millwall always bang on about how they sell out at ours. They consider us their second biggest rival after West Ham.

Not true. Every Millwall fan I know absolutely hates Palace and wishses nothing but the worst for our club.

I thought it was Mullery and Venables that started it.
