I'm no where near Roy's age but I've always respected older people for their life and often business experiences. It's quite ridiculous to see the number of ageist comments on here which indicates that this type of discrimination is rife in the UK. There's so little respect for older people in the last 20 years, maybe the younger generations are simply jealous of people like Roy's achievements in life.

Is that your default reaction?

I am not far off Hodgson's age - I am 65.
From experience I have to disagree with the general thrust of these sentiments.

I haven’t read all of this thread, so this has probably been said but the reason this idea is silly is, much as it would be nice to have a long term plan, it’s not realistic. Every manager is a few results away from the sack. Roy has a contract, which I believe he will fulfil and that’s as long term as it gets.

What’s the alternative? Invest in and gamble on an inexperienced coach and groom them for the job when Roy retires? And then what? He makes a name for himself and goes to a bigger club or he struggles and gets sacked.

The next time we’re without a manager, we’ll have to interview the best candidates around at the time, and that’s it.

Roy Hodgson has quoted publicly that he's really enjoyingthe Palace managerial engagement. Enjoyment reduces stress levels.

What issues does Roy Hodgson have? I've seen nothing in the media about anything related to him on this subject.

Yes I agree with the central tenet of your argument.

Situations are very 'Fluid' in football so perhaps the best one can do is to adopt the model akin to the 'Black Box' used at Southampton where managers and coaches are analysed and scrutinised over a period and if one loses one's manager one can use the 'Black box' details to selection possible candidates depending on their availability etc etc, adopting a realistic and pragmatic approach.

is the sensible answer. Much like a scouting network players we should have something in place for managers too. Sadly for us both of these things are severely lacking at Palace as highlighted by us scratching around for both players and managers last minute

why don't we do it by heredity - Roy's oldest boy should take over and so on, if there's no male heir of course there would be a problem

Just a few questions. How come, with all this supposed careful planning, do Southampton only have one more point than us and are on considerably worse form? Why aren't they league and European champions? Is this just a bloke who's created a nice little job for himself that has no actual value in the real world?
