is this the same Mateta who has come on as a sub and look totally lost ?

They all struggle with the shear physicality of our league, and constantly being pressed.
For me Mateta, seems to have two outstanding things to improve. His touch is loose, and his natural body strength is under par for him to be a real threat in this league, he needs both to improve his hold up play, which at the moment he doesn’t seem to on top of. it’s not something a player of his age can not improve, and may well do.
At this time Benteke , is better in both departments, and now he has added goals ,is the player that we always hoped he was. And replacing him with a proven alternative wouldn’t come cheap.. Maybe Mateta,s arrival has give him a push.

Actually he's started two games and had five sub appearances and played a total of 215 minutes. He was on for 65 mins in his first start (against Leeds, where he lost possession leading to their first goal and did nothing noteworthy as far as I recall) and 75 for his second (Brighton where he scored hsi great goal - and we know what happened when the sub came on in that game).

Quite frankly, apart from that great goal, the rest of his play has been underwhelming and he needs more time to adjust to the PL. I also saw him in the U23s scoring two headers against Stoke. He had some good other moments in that game as well. However, he was never going to replace Benteke after Benteke came on and scored THAT goal and tbf Benteke's form since the Brighton game would have kept a lot of PL strikers out of the team.

I'm not dissing Mateta. I'd like to see him given a run. Much will now depend on who comes in as manager and whether or not Benteke stays.

And we all know how this is going to go Silvertop - He signs for West Ham (for free) and Bowen, Benrahma and the fullbacks will feed CB lovely crosses from the wings and he’ll be a roaring success - with Moyes playing to his strengths.
