A good keeper gives the whole team confidence and you could see the nerves tonight. Good centre halves and decent defensive midfielders are why Hennessey keeps cleans sheets.

When they hit the post tonight he had started his dive after the ball had rebounded out, his reactions are too slow and he just isn't good enough for this level.

I know he does his best, and you can see he is trying every match, but sadly neither him or Speroni are good enough, and until we get this sorted we will never show our full potential as a team.

I know we kept a clean sheet against Citeh, but imagine how many more we would keep with a quality keeper. We need to find another Nigel Martyn. There must be one out there!

Oh to have another Nige!

If people check the Transfer Talk part of the forum you will see we have been linked with a few keepers.

Vicente Guaita looks the most likely at 3.6 mill

Also been linked with the Ipswich keeper, which Mick MCarthy has confirmed

And we have Origi, Kenyan/Norweigen keeper from Lillistrom on trial at the moment.

Hennessy commanded his area and was alert throughout, making some decent saves.

Every time he concedes a goal, he is made a scapegoat for the whole defence.

I wouldn’t say there are more than half-a-dozen better keepers in the premier League than him and Speroni.

Can any of their critics identify affordable replacements?

There must be upgrades available but a lot of them would be short-term solutions due to age. We'd be back here again in short order.

The problem isn't that Hennessey is "s***"; the problem is that Speroni is 38.

Guaita looks like a decent option, conceding less than a goal a game behind a s*** defence. Don't know what his kicking and distribution is like though.

We won't show our "full potential as a team" this season because we don#t have the money required, if we did we'd breach FFP, and we had to extirpate de Boer before we could start to play by which time we were half a dozen games behind everyone else. De Boer spent the summer pardewing our existing players instead of participating in the transfer window so we're now having to catch up.

As I said a keeper upgrade would be most welcome but I don't think we'll go down with these two provided we do the other work required on the squad. (it's also a bit iffy having only two keepers anyway, of course).

I also believe we wont go down with the 2 keepers we have, but the additional points we will pick up compared to what they have both cost us this year will be massive for the 2nd half of the season and will put us in a much better position to start next season.

Don't get me wrong, Julian is a legend for this club and Wayne does the best he can, but neither has taken the shirt and made it their own this season and I think both have been given enough chances.

We need a keeper who will be vocal and command the whole of his area. It is what our back 4 have been crying out for and will breed even greater confidence. I truly believe a better keeper will change the whole team ethos and will mean we can open up a little more and not have to play a back 6 for most of the match to protect our clear weakness.

Easy to blame the keeper, but both goals against us tonight was firstly down to Cabaye not being close enough to block the attack just outside the area and the other was a mistake by Reidlewald giving away the free kick after losing control of the ball he had just won? We probably do need a new keeper but tonight wasn’t down to Hennessey

Here we go again.

We gave them masses of pressure and put Delaney in front of him. Can't anyone see that if you give the other lot that much pressure you're asking for trouble no matter who is in goal? If we concede 10 shots on target and he misses 1 in 12, you might be OK. If we concede 20, well, do the math.

The problem was the central defenders and the lesson is that if we do anything in this window we need to provide cover for Tomkins. As the moment if anything happens to Kelly or Tomkins with Sakho and Dann out of it then we're relying on Delaney and he can't do it any more at this level. You'll have seen also that Riedewald was less effective when he was dropped deeper so he isn't going to be a centre-back. Same goes if you move Fosu-Mensah or van Aanholt into the middle.

The other problem is that they kept us deep in our own half for much of the game. We didn't get our last two league results by doing that, did we?

Tomkins and Kelly in central defence, and a decent attack of our own, and we stop City scoring for the first time in God knows how long. With Hennessey in goal. Tonight, same keeper, no Wilf and no Tomkins, lose to the weed.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but whilst a keeper upgrade would be most welcome (and seems to be in the offing), Hennessey is *not* the root cause of all our problems and neither is Speroni.

Solid post

How many times do we hear this though? We need a strong match winning keeper that instilles confidence and belief and a fighting ethos into our team right from the back. Then we won’t have to keep debating the same point of whether the game was lost because of the goalkeeper or not, over and over again.

Do people not remember a time when this debate didn’t happen all the time? Because I do. And it’s so frustrating!

Problem last night was not big Wayne it was if any one person Delaney. The guy is a warrior but now so past his best.

Also our squad. It's thin and old. Neither team played their first team but sad to say they played a team of younger players who were hungry and out to impress we played a team of over paid journeymen more keen on keeping warm, especially in the first half.

Whole team simply not good enough.

Bristol City all over

We do need a better keeper but given our injury woes I think we need another centre half before a goalkeeper as well as the obvious centre forward.
WH was not great last night to be honest regerdless of the fact that the defense in front of him was shocking.
Hie no mans land positioning for their second goal was rank bad in my opinion.

An upgrade to a keeper who makes match-winning saves on a regular basis would be great. Both WH and JS do it occasionally - Speroni against Leicester with that low save that WH wouldn't have got to, Hennessey with that tip-over at Southampton that JS would not have reached. Both let in goals they should perhaps stop - WH last night, JS at Newcastle and a couple of the Arsenal goals for instance. What is not fair from BG and others is to blame WH for every goal he concedes whilst claiming that all those JS let in were unstoppable. If money allows, we need a better keeper - end of.
