we have been poor in many first halfs compared to second halfs for quite a few premiership seasons now.

but yeah, Zaha needs to go back onto the wing now.

It must be obvious that Zaha is a top-class winger and should be used as such. The question is then if he goes up in the middle behind Benteke, where do the crosses come from? Townsend, van Aanholt, Fosu-Mensah, and the midfielders but with no winger on the opposite side from Townsend our balance is gone.

We now have the option of Sørloth up there next to Benteke with Zaha and Townsend wingers and we were bossing the spam on Tuesday with Bakary Sako in that role, until Zabaleta crippled him.

Zaha played on the wing against West Ham and didn’t get a kick, Zabaletta had him in his pocket with the help of 2 others. Perhaps Roy saw that and tried playing down the middle to out think Rafa, it didn’t work, but not predictable.
For years people have been moaning we don’t have a plan B, now we have, they continue moaning.

Another subtle change that happened in the second 1/2 was Benteke was tasked with picking up Shelvey when we did not have the ball. In first half Shelvey ran the show but in the second he hardly had a kick and should have given away a second penalty for his foul on McCarther.

Wilf out wide is a no-brainer for me like is said on here. How many times do we start poorly and improve when Wilf poses the problem out wide? We are only supporters and supposed not to understand but on this issue we are right. If we started with Wilf out wide he would unsettle defences immediately and send all their pre-match planning to pot. Of this I'm sure!!!

Im not sure it's so much a case of "getting things wrong for the start", as having to feel out the opposition, and change tactcis mid game to react to theirs. The fact that Roy tends to get the changes right should be celebrated. Pardew often completely changed tac half way through games, just like a gambler throwing it all on red, at least with Roy he's correct more times than not.

I agree it is good that Roy changes thiongs but to be honest when you are at home you set the tactics and make them adapt to you - not the other way around.
We pay too much respect sometimes on our own patch in my opinion.

Not as simple as people are making out. Wilf has had great games this season up front as well as on the wing. Playing up front in the first half he almost had a 1 vs 1, had a scuffed shot he should have scored, and nearly scored with the deflected shot that their gk saved. Not that bad.

The period when Benteke was out and it was him and Andros up front he was great like against Chelsea. As some have also mentioned he was quiet on the wing vs Burnley, Arsenal and West Ham.

I don't think he's that great in a 442 on the left wing, but in 433/4231 he is brilliant, particularly when we're on top.

I trust Roy - he clearly identified what needed to change at HT and did it. He can get credit for that.

I agree, Roy has done so well and is far more adaptable and 9/10 gets it right. Just at home I want us to take the lead and set out what we are doing, especially against lower teams.

A lot of sensible comments on here but I particularly agree with this. I want us to make a fast start to matches and let the opposition worry about how good we are for a change.

Quite a few have mentioned our strengths later in games & I think we do have a lot of players with stamina & speed to outplay even the top sides towards the end. If only we could learn to keep possession & slow games down while frustrating the oppo in the first half we'd be much better & less likely to concede first. Maybe next season eh?

Like Burnley for example? That was the home game before last, not exactly a lifetime ago.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Wilf as winger and Jimmy Mac in behind the striker' by Midlands Eagle

Why did Roy decide to place wilf inside and jimmy mac left wing? He has done this several times, and when we didnt have benteke it was fine with 4 centre mids, but now can we start playing players in their proper positions. Wilf can create so much more out wide, and doesnt get enough space inside, and jimmy mac doesnt look comfortable out wide, he looks better just playing off the striker than. He also hasnt looked comfortable playing as a 2 in mid field, defending the back line but looks better coming back and helping up with lose balls, with his energy! Wilf also can run at full backs and skin them all day long, sorry for little rant just not sure why we do this lopsided formation when we have to right players on the pitch for a 'normal' one!
