I may be misunderstanding your response. My point is that we are overspending both in terms of wages against income and also in terms of the transfer fees we have paid. This is not sustainable hence the lack of transfer activity in the last 2 windows

On one level we have progressed our longest stay in top division and possibly in the quality of the first choice players.

However in financial terms it is not healthy. Should we (can we)afford to pay players over 100k per week and buy players at around £30 million

Sorry I’ve not read the earlier posts but isn’t this the reality of top flight football now ?
Every club’s an owner’s tantrum or bad decision or two from difficult times.
When the continual point is raised about progress I think back to 2013 when we were promoted with the owners underwriting a £5mil loss a year.
If we hadn’t gone up that season I think we’d most likely be a league one outfit by now.

.....and luck plays a huge part. So many fine lines fine margins. Like beating Watford 1-0 on a penalty at Wembley to gain promotion. But through Lady Luck and Parish decision making we are now approaching a really good place. Although many fans have an issue with Hodgson, he has brought stability. The last few home games have been really odd because we haven’t been on the edge of our seats. Place fans just aren’t used to that.

Wilf hasn’t stated he wants to leave, we haven’t stated we want to sell, there is no story to this at all. In truth he most probably is too good for any team in Premiership apart from Man City.

If other teams want Wilf, they need to start putting the money where their big mouths are....

Too good for any premier league team except Man City?
You believe this?
He isn’t consistent enough.
I think he’d struggle to make the bench at city and Liverpool and would be a bit part player at Tottenham and Chelsea.
That would leave Arsenal , who need a complete new back 4 before they think about forwards.

This really cant drag on for the whole summer, there needs to have a Date maybe July 1st put on it, cant have him going a week before the deadline ends, other clubs would have us over a barrel then.

Actually - I don't think that they would because I think we would just say no.
I truly believe that Wilf has too much respect for CPFC to play silly beggars at the last minute and on top of that he has a belief in his own worth and value.
Clubs offering derisory money will not sit comfortably with him or any other player for that matter.
It will also mean that his fee would be with on a par with the other also rans and in turn that would not guarantee him game time.
It's all very well being a in a Champions League squad but no good if you don't play!
In this case the right fee from the right club will likely get him a move - anything less will see him in red and blue again next season I reckon.

If money is that short then I agree it makes sense to cash in but with Premiership status being worth about £120 million pa and Wilf being the vital player for us in recent years it doesn’t necessarily make financial sense to sell him.

Andros Townsend said on Goals on Sunday that in his opinion Wilf was happy and that AWB needed at least 1 more season at Palace before even considering a move. Of course it’s only his opinion but I thought it meaningful. I hope they both stay and serve as examples to the next influx from our academy.

Or is it doesn’t make financial sense to never sell him if we’re in danger of relegation without him.

Replacements before he retires vs never any replacements?

How much money is there after wages and costs? Zero. I suppose it’s better than £5 mil losses 9 years ago in the championship I suppose. I wonder what they’d be today.

They need to sell the club to rich people AND with the intention of investing rather than bullsh1tting.

We’ve progressed since 2010, obviously. But we went backwards with the signings and strategies of Benteke and Sakho.

What started as sell Bolasie for between £25-£30 million and get Benteke and Townsend for about £40 million because our scouting, planning and strategies are so poor ended up in us regressing by spending beyond our means to stay in the league with sakho signing and both their wages.

That isn’t progress. That’s desperate overspending or covering up the cracks with staying in the league by overspending looks like progress.

They need to make these sale(s) work, whether it’s AWB only or Zaha as well, to claim progress. I’m not saying it’s easy, but picking £30 million players was the easy option our size shouldn’t be doing if you’re being honest about it. Well it’s evident now, that’s for sure.

I would agree and disagree with this post.

The squad we had when we came up desperately needed improving and doing that with a couple of established players was a good move in my opinion. You can't just pick hidden gems out constantly.

Also buying those players made a statement to current players like Wilf and future transfers that we were serious about staying in the league and would have undoubtedly helped in keeping players like Wilf at the club.

Having said that, was it financially sensible, in hindsight no. I think Sakho has been worth his fee and wages but we weren't to know Benteke would fall off a cliff quite like he has.

Could our scouting team be better, undoubtedly. I wouldn't call signing Sakho a lack of progress though. We've had him at our club in what is a defenders prime.

Possibly, but also the manager choices haven’t helped the Benteke situation. Imo his demise started with FDB. FDB was the biggest joke Parish could’ve thought of. FDB using Benteke? Laughable. Then comes Roy through desperation because of FDB and he doesn’t use Benteke correctly (once our only striker is available again and another reason why we’ve regressed. If the sums meant that would be the case, then why did we steer ourselves that way with our choices? Is that progression? Ok we’ve experienced a bit of misfortune with Benteke but we’ve part created that (I remember him thumping the ball at HT under FDB because of the service), and we’ve created more hamstringing of business. The big sales will determine a lot.

I think a big problem has been we came up with a team that was a counter attacking team. We were fantastic at it and still are. Holloway alluded to this in the interview where he said he wanted to change the style of play but the players had no interest in playing any other way.

We've then had a chairman who clearly wants us to change the style of play and has made appointments with that goal in mind, Pardew, FDB, Holloway etc. The problem then comes when this doesn't work and we revert to Pulis, Allardyce, Roy etc.

We typically spend when we are in danger and therefore, the purchases have been in keeping with the style of play needed to stay in the division.

As you say, this is down to a complete lack of strategy and the balls to see it through.

If we do sell in this window one or both of AWB and Zaha, now is the perfect time to try and implement that change with the funds available and getting players in to fit the long term goal. Unfortunately, I have no faith in us doing that or Roy having enough say in the transfers for them to fit his vision. If we do go through this process, it will undoubtedly be painful for the first few months, but the only way to progress is be brave and trust what you've implemented. It worked for Norwich but I fear we are too trigger happy here.
