I understand that Jeremy Corbyn will today call for 4 new public holidays to celebrate the national days of the United Kingdom. In principle I have no problem with this as I am the first to moan that we English do not celebrate St George's day.

However I fear this is gesture politics giving the workers a day off because in reality this doesn't happen. Before I retired I took a job in a supermarket I was genuinely shocked to be told by my manager I was expected to work every Bank Holiday for the bonus of an extra £20. I offered to pay the store £20 so I could have the day off.

I did some research and it turns out that bank holidays are no longer mandatory days off. In short your employer can demand you work it for no extra pay. Even if you are given the day off the employer can still deduct this from your annual holiday allowance. As we have 8 public holidays if we increase them and the employer deducts it from your allowance it means the worker has less flexibility with their remaining days
The tabloids love to build this sort of thing up but its a con.

Finally I would rather have a holiday in the autumn where we have a big gap between August and Christmas day.

Anyway rant over Happy St George's day (again)

Sorry, more 4 day weeks in spring and summer so we can do what we do best. Getting hammered. Forget productivity. Drink.

Don't be dim.

The native 'English' themselves come from various parts of northern Europe.

The actual 'Saint' George isn't about the real person at all. It's a mythological symbol.

Just like the English hymn Jerusalem sings about Jesus walking on our green and pleasant lands.

You just don't get it.....You obviously weren't raised with any sense of historical English culture.

It is a mythological symbol, as you say.

For historical English culture well give me someone English who contributed so much to our culture, like Shakespeare.

That would be a great day to celebrate, and with so much content.

Aren't you just looking for things to moan about here?

It's not really that important......it's about concepts....it could be about Robin Hood or King Arthur.
