The Old Pals' Act - SFC v AFCB

Back in the 60s and 70s when my dad would take me to the footie, he would often grumble about "the old pals' act" i.e. clubs "taking it easy" against their relegation-threatened neighbours in matches towards the end of the season. The logic was that it was better to let some northern team get relegated, in favour of retaining two local derbies, with all the revenue-generating opportunities that came with them (and lower travel costs!). "Football is a business" he would wisely remind me! Leaving aside that our destiny should be in our own hands, do we think "the old pals' act" still exists, and if so, should we be wary of it today - Southampton against Bournemouth?

Bournemouth fans are desperate to help send Southampton down. That plus the £2 million a place at stake for finishing higher up the table should see a decent match.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

I was at Selhurst Park in the seventies when we were in danger of relegation and were playing Chelsea. Peter Osgood was clear through on an open goal when he inexplicably tripped over an ant

Somehow I can't see us doing Brighton any favours. The only time I smelled a rat was when the Wet Spam need a result at Old Traffic. I watched the game and wanted to ask Sir Alex where did he get the 11 lookalikes because they were awful. Big surprise United then signed Tevez.

Bizarrely, I met Sir Alf Ramsey on Plymouth railway station on the 9th of April 1970, and told him I thought Peter Osgood should be in the England team! I was 11 at the time though!! A few weeks later he (Osgood) was nodding one in against the hated Leeds Utd in the FA Cup Final replay. To this day the most enjoyable Cup Final ever IMO.
