On reflection it has been a good world cup for England but no more than that. We beat 3 teams we should have beat. Drew with a half decent team and then won on penalties. And lost to the two teams who were better than us. In many ways we did what we should have done. That said, we have all seen England lose to teams who we should have beaten before, many times, hence why we believe we have done well. I think its been a great tournament this year. From an England perspective I think we now have a foundation to build upon. My biggest regret is that Wilf is not playing for us. I truly think he would have been our stand out player. Whilst all the England players are decent, none are really world class which I believe Wilf is. For anyone who disagrees and does not believe Wilf could do it at international level check out the below link to the goal he scored against Russia and tell me how many England players could do that!

I think the more positive attitude is helped by the fact the media seemed to enjoy talking to Southgate and the players as they were more open and honest than pervious groups. Sure that will all change if we get a few bad results though!

Sure that will all change if we get a few bad results though! In all the years since I first saw him at Mitcham Training Ground (how many of those ago is it), Gareth Southgate has not changed. He remains an unassuming and polite person. I don't think this job will change any more than anything else did, including being captain of Crystal Palace the night of kung fu fighting.

Yes - he has hardly going to get into full rant mode against the press or manage to offend a group of people over a totally un-football related issue. Crash helmet on but this is my opinion on Englands World Cup: I think people are going a little overboard about the England side. They beat Panama, Tunisia Colombia and Sweden and lost to Belgium and Croatia. That is not that encouraging. They are young (which is good) but most have been playing at the highest level in packed stadiums for several years. They are not complete newcomers. They have scored 12 goals but 6 of them came against a very poor Panama side. I'm not sure how many of the 6 remaining came from open play but I don't think it was very many. The set pieces were good but should supplement your goals from open play, not the other way round. The England defence looks pretty poor to me and has been exposed at times. The midfield still has no-one like an Iniesta or Modric. Sterling does divide opinions but look at Mbappe for a player with pace, just like Sterling, but with so much more on top. England did better than I thought they would but they are nowhere near as good as what some people are suggesting. Edited by johnno42000 (12 Jul 2018 6.05pm)

Excluding tournaments held at home - which of course skews matters hugely - in ALL of our tournament history (WCs AND Euros), England has NEVER beaten a single top-tier team we've faced at knockout stage. That's "NEVER beaten a single top-tier team we've faced at knockout stage". Never. In all of our history. Ever. We're simply not very good. Never really have been.
