f*** these people.

I agree. But they probably have the wrong police there. Need more Public Order or riot trained police in there. All they have are police who stop you in your car or call for backup to stop one or two people in the street. Theyíre outnumbered without anything to use. Only going to go one way.

So slavery was OK because it was legal at the time? Sure you want to stick your neck out on that one?

I wouldnít want to judge previous generations by todayís standards.
Was slavery OK? No. Was making children work in factories and mills and mines? No, but these things happened. Why hide it?
As the Americans say, we should own it and move on.

Itís not hiding it by not having a statue of a slave owner there any longer. History belongs in museums. Statues are supposed to commemorate good.

What are the rules on statues? I donít know.
There are over18,000,000 slaves in India. That bothers me more than a 200 year old statue of a man Iíve never heard of before.

Where is the evidence that the people who have been requesting its removal asked for that to happen, just one piece of evidence. There is none I reckon. Not once would that have been middle ground. It's gone now and will cost £1000s to retrieve and repair the damage. Then as soon as its put in a museum it will be attacked again. Like it would have been if it was in a museum already.
Socialism is on the march and you know what, stick it up your arse when it gets here danh as you will be paying because you work. Your views on the righteous nature you perceive it is will change very quickly as you've never seen it in action.
Once your money is gone and your saved things are gone the reality will hit.

If you read up on it there have been attempts to have it removed by the proper channels for years.

This isnít trying to erase history. Statues are meant to be for those to be idolised. If you are comfortable with a statue for someone who made a fortune out of slavery then that should really make you worry.

I already told you I couldn't care less about the statue I am not defending it or slavery I am defending law and order against anarchy.

You say attempts have been made to remove it legally, so the local Labour council hasn't been listening to the people?

And what if a group decide they don't like the statue of Nelson Mandela? it's okay to tear that down as well? No I didn't think so.

I predict now that this is setting an example and other statues will be torn down if they happen to be favourites of the left they will be outraged.

Iím not sure this is as controversial as youíre making out

Criminal act aside, no one seems to be saying Ďerase historyí - or that the simple act of removing a slave traders statue, seemingly a symbol of celebration of murder and tyranny, equals that?

There are plenty of celebrated and also controversial and horrendous historical figures that donít have statues and are heavily prominent in written and taught history. They donít have statues. Does that mean theyíre erased from history? Bit of a silly point.

Not sure I get the argument

As for Churchill - Iím not sure that statue will be pulled down anytime soon. He should be remembered and revered with a statue but heís not as squeaky clean and good ol England as some might like to make out.

Nor was Nelson Mandela, has his statue been defaced? I think I know the answer

Like, also, the idea that that it's wrong for the public to remove a piece of public property seems contradictory.

It was in a public space. The public rose up and took it down.

Awesome. Taking ownership of the city.

What a bizarre last sentence

Alternative views are what make for great debate

However whatever the view, it should at least be a worthy contribution rather than recycled rhetoric from whatever targeted social media certain individuals had been reading 5 minutes before hand. Even worse when itís reposted constantly as a form of propaganda communication

Do you think the same about DanH? Probably not
