I couldn't tell where a lot of them were playing, Kouyate expecially, Reidewald seemed to swap central mid for left wing back, Johnny seemed to be used wide, Puncheon was a widish attacker first half but deeper second half, maybe I'm just stupid but formation wise I could not quite tell where everyone one was in the old 4-4-2, or maybe it was total football, or a different formation, can anybody help me please without suggesting medication?

Right sided centre back as far as I could see.

Dont think AWB changed to a winger, played all game as a wing back.

He was absolute quality last night. Not sure who was meant to be playing right wing but AWB showed how it was done. Bossed the whole length of the pitch. Nothing wasted from him, always looking to move forward, great touch. This guy can make it as a winger or defender.

Midfield looked messy. Joniesta and Meyer feel are both similar players and got tangled up in some of the play. Both looked good enough to fill the role. Kouyate and Riedewald seemed to drift around as you say.

Just don’t think he’s had a proper chance. Would like to see him given 2/3 games in a row. Worst that happens is he doesn’t score and that’s what we get from Benteke anyway. Glad he scored tonight.

I agree, some people simply expect instant success. I think Sorloth is steadily improving (even if this was against a sub standard opposition).

His hold up game is far far better than Benteke's and his ability to therefore bring the team further up the pitch is far more effective.

I completely understand and agree that he still needs to sharpen up...but the other aspects of his game are already on a par if not better than Benteke. I mean...he was only caught offside the once...in the 92nd minute.

Job done, not brilliant but we're through to the next round. Much better 2nd. half, guess Roy must have got stuck into them at the break. Top performance by Meyer, won't be long before he's a regular choice in the first 11. ABW excellent. Liked Kouyate at times, didn't see enough of the ball tonight but looked ok when he did. Good performances by Sorloth (well taken goal), Guaita (looks like a safe pair of hands) and Riedewald too. Shame Ayew couldn't play so looking forward to seeing him, I think he'll be an excellent addition to the squad.

Townsend and Ward changed the game when they came on..nice to see Roy make changes on 60mins when they were required!

Good to see Inniss play in a senior game - and after a nervy start I thought he played well. And very pleased to see Jonny Williams in the shirt again.

The less said about last nights game the better.
Sorloth is bang average and it is quite astonishing that the powers that be have decided to make us endure yet another season with no clinical goalscorer.
We had our best games last season with Wilf and Townsend up front.

far too negative - Sorloth improved markedly after the goal, he lays the ball off too deep sometimes but that's because he is isolated, when Meyer steamed up to help him out he fed him with decent touches generally - he strikes me as an intelligent player with a good attitude who will work hard to improve - some of his play for the national side shows he can finish - remember it took Jedinak a full season to adjust - Sorloth looks Championship level atm, can't see him being too prolific, but a letter day David Swindlehurst? possibilities, too early to write him off, there is more to come, how much is open to question

Good match and nice to see Williams play (and play very well at that). I love the way he drives at the opposition from midfield, something our other players don't seem to do. Meyer looked good although he seemed to run out of of steam a bit, not really surprising.

Guaita did well with a couple of shots. I thought Sorloth did quite well and kept the ball and laid it off pretty well. Very good goal.

Star of the show was AWB, such a pacey player and seems to get tackles in at just the right time.

I was thinking exactly the same Becky. He’s actually taller than Ninja which surprises me.

I do remember Eric Young and in particular at home to Liverpool that one of his 'gangly legs' reached where nobody else could and poked it over the line from a corner, for an important 1-0 home win.

He always wore that bandage round his head I wondered if his head was glued together.......

But we have Connor Wickham, who we are told is just like having a new signing. Call me a bluff old traditionalist but I thought you had to play to score ? Not many goals are scored from Nando's or the treatment table.

I thought we may have learned our lesson and got proper back up for Benheskey who surely has his days numbered at Selhurst. Will Ayew bang them in ? I seriously doubt it another bang average striker that was part of a team that got relegated.

Trust me folks I know my footy and this season is going to be a tough old b******. We witnessed what having Ward and Kelly on the pitch at the same time on the right hand side of defence leads to, basically Townsend ends up trying to play right back (a la Watford) because ward is out of his depth with anyone that can run at more than a childs pace, meaning we only have Wilf as a real attacking threat, and as Townsend is loathed to go to far forward (because ward is to slow), we end up like we did when Wilf was out and we only had Boliaise, teams just doubled up on our fast winger, and nullified our crosses into the box for Murray, now it's Benheskey ( what I wouldn't give to have Murray back.)

Our style of play requires quick full backs and fast wingers ON BOTH SIDES, without this we don't have the same devastating attacking options from both sides of the pitch.

On a plus side, was nice to see Mayer link up with wilf, why Roy insists on playing him wide left is somewhat of a mystery.

I was just going to comment on your suggestion that we need "fat" wingers but you've gone and spoiled it by editing your post!
