Emmanuel Macron says we need a European army to defend against the US and the usual suspects......I remember Nick Clegg calling those who raised this as saying 'a lie' calling it a 'dangerous fantasy'.

They have been lying to us about this for decades.

The insult to the US is a disgrace.....The US helped rebuild Europe after WW2 and they have hundreds of thousands of their war dead in our fields.

Yep.....But you know....'orange man bad' from some of the 'intellectuals' on the left eager to give us another enemy.

You cannot have Nato and a European army.

It is ridiculous nonsense. What will this army be used for? Because it sure wouldn't be able to defend Europe.

A bit like the US' reaction to the Suez crisis from which the differing reactions to the US' imperialism stems. Where without a war the US managed to end the British empire albeit ailing.

The UK decided to get closer to the new boss in town (hence the UK view of a "special relationship" ; the French decided not and declined to join NATO and have always had a healthy scepticism.

Oddly enough during the mid war years, the UK government perceived the growing threat of the US imperialism as the next war rather than Germany. Things could have been so different if Hitler had the patience to stay his hand.

edit : oddly enough it is only fairly recently we finished paying for those out of date DDs etc, the US sold us during WW2.

2 edit : and no a Euro army woulkd not work without full federalism like the US, and nobody wants that!

Brussels wants federalism.

What would that army be used for?

Money we borrowed from America paid for the National Health Service.

The further away we distance ourselves from US foreign policy the better. Our involvement in Iraq was a national disgrace and all the rabble rousing by Trump we should have nothing to do with

I'd say it's lucky for us that America changed from being pacifist isolationists or we would be part of the German or Russian empire.

That post war loan was used to prop UK overseas military bases as per the man who negotiated the loan. This was kept a secret from the US.

You mean the overseas military bases we needed to counteract the soviet union during the cold war.

And the Marshal plan money helped rebuild countless homes for the working class after the war and all over Europe....so stop spreading lies.

It wasn't just for building the military bases we needed.....not by a giant way at all.

Can I see some evidence for this.

The US intervened on Britain's side in WW1 to the cost of thousands of lives. I'd like to see where you get this from.
