Utter nonsense, it was Roy that notice AWB and trusted he was good enough to throw in at the deep end.
There are some true morons on here that seem to think our youth players are all world beaters. News flash, they are not. We (as with many Prem clubs) have some promising youngsters with big potential. This is the Premiership where every point is precious. Roy cannot afford to risk Palace's place in the division as well as his own job/reputation on potential. We simply cannot to take the gamble and it wouldn't be fair to put that kind of pressure upon a youngster unless the coaching staff are 100% certain he is ready either.
Sure, Once we gain mathematical safety and are no longer chasing league position, other possible outcomes fine, throw in a couple of youngsters and see how they do.
Not exactly covered themselves in glory every time they have been given a chance in the cups though have they?

Very sensible post. We are playing in the most competitive league in the world, just throwing youngsters in at the deep end is suicidal, unless they are an exceptional talent and I donít think we are overburdened with those. Take Kirby did well in the youth World Cup, then his profile was raised, he was sent out to Blackpool on loan to get experience at a higher level. He didnít do particularly well and was often not picked by them, so why do people think players like him should be in our first team?

Also many players although very capable with their feet are not so with their heads ..Zaha springs to mind.

Spot on. The heading ability of our team less the defenders is awful. We barely even attempt to challenge its just a token gesture most of the time, it really bugs me. Only Kouyate and Jeff in fairness can win a header from our midfield, its a real weakness of ours. Wilf (forgiven for the BHA goal), Townsend, Luka, PVA, Jimmy, are all terrible in the air. The worst I saw was AWB, watching him trying to co-ordinate a header was brilliant.

He started slowly, but by the end of his loan he was doing well. He got the fans player of the month for April and scored a great goal for them too. I'm not saying he is ready for 90 minutes yet, but seeing him in pre-season there is something about him that makes you think he's a real talent. The challenge for him is that we have a lot of central midfielders at the moment.

What we really need is a young striker or winger who's ready to step up. Daly scored a fair amount while out on loan, but he is definitely not ready to lead the line on his own in my opinion.

..Is he ready to get 20 mins at the end of a game instead of Benteke?

Well, no. If he's not ready he's not ready.
Blimey what part of this do people not understand? These are kids we are talking about. Throwing them in in front of 26,000 people in the most competitive league in the World could destroy their career if something goes wrong.
Its irresponsible and frankly, if Palace had my son on the books and they threw him in before he was ready (regardless of whether he gave a good account of himself or not) I'd be immediately seeking to move him.

I do agree in theory with what you are saying. It sounds as if more of the frustration is around us having an old squad and nothing promising coming through the youth ranks.

I'm really not sure how any of the youth players would fair if given the opportunity. That said, it's usually attacking players who are more likely to get a run out as there is less chance of catastrophe than there is a defender.

Someone made the point earlier about Benteke coming on for 10,15,20 minutes. Given he has literally done nothing the previous 2 seasons it may as well be worth throwing any attacking player from the youth ranks in there provided there is some reasonable expectation they would not make a fool of themselves and damage them long term. As previously mentioned, I am not sure if there are any in that category but if so should lead to questions about the academy.

But therein lies the problem. The probability is that this would not be doing a young player any favours if he's out of his depth. And the current crop of younger players isn't producing forwards that are ready for the first team.

The investment in Category 1 status does not come with any guarantees around producing another Zaha or AWB, but the club needs that just to remain competitive.

But is that Not how they get their experience? It could push them onwards and force them to make the step up to the next level.

Sometimes all it takes in faith that they can take the step up, and Managing the youngsters and their expectations.

Now, I'm not saying that Day is able, but it strikes me that something is failing somewhere if we have no-one that is in a position to be given a 1st Team chance - even off the bench.
