You have to assume though, that something is clearly wrong with the transfer strategy and the manager and DOF being on not just on different pages, but different books.

It's called Erdal Rakip syndrome

So we bought Benteke and Sakho for roughly the same price as we got for Wan B. I know who I would rather have at CP and on a fraction the salary cost.
Yet, now we seem to turn away from any new players over a few mill.
I thought SP was an accountant, but this history doesn't really line up with normal accountancy practise. It is more of someone not really in the know.
Any thoughts?

Maybe, but not better than past experience of the clubs managerial recruitment policy. It's either old warhorses, almost guaranteed to avoid the drop, but who we end up having a row with over recruitment or a list of every available manager at roughly the right level, of whom we manage to pick the spectacularly unsuitable de Boar, who gave the impression of being totally deranged.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Everyone was very pleased when we landed the two of them and both of them were highly instrumental in keeping us in the Premiership but unfortunately both ultimately failed to justify their high costs in terms of transfer fees and wages

They are both good players, both injury prone, and both did well in their first season here, and yes, helped to keep us up. Personally, I think it’s time to offload both, and bring in bright younger players, but easier said than done

Sadly, we do not have the expertise in SP/DF to do this or indeed have a succession planning whether it be players or a Manager after Roy!

I wouldn't say everyone. For Benteke, I was totally against it, while for Sakho (despite liking him in his loan time) I'd have never paid 27 million. It's enormous for a central defender.

As for keeping us up in one season, they weren't that important. Benteke scored 15 in that season, out of which 2 penalties, so 13 goals on his own, but he also had all the playing time in the world (3000 minutes). I believe plenty strikers can score 13 in 3000 minutes.

He scored 15, pens count as goals belive it or not. I disagree there are plenty of players that would score 15 goals in a prem season playing for mid to lower prem league team. Yes his goals kept us up that season, no doubt about it.

It’s Groundhog Day for me - nearing the end of a transfer window, no signings, management saying that having players back from injury will be “like having new signings” (what a load of cxck that is), speculation Wilf going in the summer, Parish with a new hairdo, American owners forgotten who we are, 11th in the Prem...........
