Couple of article about why we need reform of the Civil Service structure. First up Public Health England [Link] Next up 85m face masks out of date and unsafe to wear. [Link] I am not letting Boris off the hook for his political blunders but somebody somewhere in the Civil Service was responsible for the disaster over PPE and PHE has shown itself to be pretty useless. That doesn't mean I am criticising civil servants I am criticising the management structure which needs to be streamlined. One more point

I am not letting Boris off the hook for his political blunders but somebody somewhere in the Civil Service was responsible for the disaster over PPE and PHE has shown itself to be pretty useless.

That doesn't mean I am criticising civil servants I am criticising the management structure which needs to be streamlined.

The 'new deal' has lasted a few days now everybody has realised it was only worth 5 billions, and is replaced by a new runner, the 30 billion revamp etc. But it's tinkering, and gimmickry. Does anybody really think �1,000 per employee would sway employers I think not. As for a cheap meal between Monday and Wednesday in August, a typical pointless exercise. There is no Keynes injection to create demand and jobs here, it is just tinkering at the edges with feel good headlines.

The 'new deal' has lasted a few days now everybody has realised it was only worth 5 billions, and is replaced by a new runner, the 30 billion revamp etc.

But it's tinkering, and gimmickry.

Does anybody really think �1,000 per employee would sway employers I think not.

As for a cheap meal between Monday and Wednesday in August, a typical pointless exercise.

There is no Keynes injection to create demand and jobs here, it is just tinkering at the edges with feel good headlines.

The problem is that we are a diverse service based economy, that and the high street was declining before the virus. Boot has just announced major redundancies, earlier this year I warned people to use their points and gift cards as it was rumoured they were in big trouble. The virus has just made things worse. I'm not sure the rescue plan is the right thing but it was always going to be a grab bag of ideas to try and help such a diverse economy. Time will tell if it works. One more point

The problem is that we are a diverse service based economy, that and the high street was declining before the virus.
