Without him, the only striker we'd have kn our books would be Ayew (who's contract is also up I think). People who are saying get rid of him are putting all their eggs in one basket with Mateta, a player most of us had only heard of a few weeks ago and doesn't have a permanent deal yet. We could easily be left high and dry at the end of the season with no recognised striker. A deal will cost £5m, a new untried striker would cost £20m and might be a flop.

As opposed to the flop we have been carrying for 3 seasons.

His current salary is reported to be circa 120K per week, therefore to offer him a years extension now we would have to pay him for 78 weeks, therefore that means he would cost us just over 9.3mil just for sitting around on his backside and he is not worthy of regular starts, I would rather spend that money on Looking for a promising younger striker and CB from a lower league!

I can only think that Benteke has incriminating photos of Steve Parish safely locked away somewhere. There's no other explanation for retaining his services, certainly not footballing, the stats speak for themselves, certainly not economic, miilions of pounds wasted on a complete flop, money that could have brought in a couple of decent strikers who can actually manage something better than a pathetic jog.

We have to get rid of Bentenke. It sends out a bad message that a new contract is not reliant on performing well (or even playing in the case of Wickham!) The only reasonable reason I would see to offer him a new deal is if it was commensurate with him being a back-up striker, rather than being one of the top earners. Whether it is down to ability, confidence, attitude or injuries, since the first season he has been terrible bar a few isolated bright spots. I had hoped he may be finally turning a corner, but against West Ham he looked like he was content just to do a couple of tidy lay-offs, as if that is sufficient for a PL striker. You watch how hard other team's strikers work and it makes you sick. Quite frankly if Mateta runs for more than 5 minutes a game he will be an upgrade. I may well have contradicted my usually supportive and measured approach to the players and manager in the last couple of days, but quite frankly I'm sick of most of them at the moment.

Benteke to be offered contract extension. Oh God. Stuck to us like s*** to a shoe. Instead of kicking it off, we pour ketchup on it. Hopeless. WBA after another striker. Benteke represents nothing but bad thoughts and negativity. If we go down, he will be like a symbol for everything that’s gone wrong. I never wanted to buy the cheat anyway. Never forgotten the blatant, cheating dive for a pen for Pool against us.

I'd love us to sign a promising you striker and a CB from the lower leagues to.... but thats all ifs and maybes. Fact is, we need to ensure their is at least 1 senior striker under contract next season. The club have worked themselves into a no win situation here, extend the contract or a player that divides opinion, or jump into the unknown without a striker.
