It's to do with breathing through your mouth, I believe. I often have to spit when I go for a run but never feel the need when I go for a long walk and only occasionally when I cycle.

I think that the FA made it a yellow card offense when football restated last season but I can't remember a single instance of a yellow being given.

I do recall a big fuss about spitting in the Tour de France but think it was the cyclists being spat at rather than the other way around. I did find this online [Link]

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

In terms of spitting, the 'Optics' are hardly positive.
Witnessing saliva being catapulted out of a mouth, in any setting, is unsightly and very unappealing.

There are worse things that footballers constantly do that are far more unsightly and unappealing than spitting and it always seems as if they wait until the cameras are on them before ejecting nasal fluids

Finger pressed against nostril, nasal fluid ejected with a degree of force.
Looks absolutely disgusting.

Thought you were going to describe Dwight Yorke.

i'm surprised nobody mentioned El Haj Diouf spitting at the crowd whenever he scored a goal.

Eze Peasy at Anfield....

Although this is clearly not in the same league as spitting and expelling nasal contents, I wonder why players - particularly when they're waiting to come on as a substitute - feel the need to stick their hands down into their shorts and keep moving them (their hands, that is) backwards and forwards round their waist.

Probably down to nerves and slightly better than watching them stick their hands into their shorts to make their privates comfy - if you know what I mean.
