it's on the Big Match Revisited tomorrow, it's not the main game as it wasn't held in the London area, includes Dalgliesh's sublime chip and Bob Paisley's great comment post match: "Palace might be the team of the Eighties, but it's still the seventies (sic)." My mate went away to this one, I went to away to Man U a month earlier as a 14 year old lad who'd gone without a lunch for a fair few days so I could put some lunch money towards the cost of ticket and coach up there - 1-1, Joe Jordan equalised in the seventh minute of injury time - basta*ds.

Budgie kept the score down with some great saves. Shame Nicholas's effort near end of game didn't go in as it was a cracker .

I went up on the coach, my mate pulled out last minute so went anyway, was 14, 3 coaches pulled up at stanley park, you could see goodison park across the way, but there was something more interesting, a 100 a side football match going on. Someone on our coach said,"its true they love there footy here, look at how many on each side". We all got off, kids, oap"s, old ladys, and the coaches pulled off. That was when the football lovers turned round to a man, and came hurtling at us, we were outnumbered and out gunned, and ran for our lives down cobbled streets , towards anfield although i had never been there,as we approached another cobbled street, a mob of another 200 were waiting, the ambush was on, i was near the back with the football playing mob breathing down my neck, the palace in front were going down like skittles, including the old ladys, there was screaming and howling, i looked forward and nobody was standing up, i had the 200 coming for me, i turned and looked behind and the football playing mob were about 20 feet behind, my head looked right, left, right left, then i noticed the front door of the terrace house, no garden coronation st styly, was ajar. I ran in and closed the door, i could hear a lady in the kitchen talking to her daughter, i hid behind the sofa.Suddenly, the door started knocking, bang, bang, bang, bang, the lady went to the door, but popped her head in to the "empty " room and said, "don"t worry love, you stay put, the same thing happened v man utd last week! She opened the door and there were hundreds outside, "get the cockney out here", they said. She told them to go away or they will miss the match, they did, but the door knocked again and another palace lad who had taken a beating came in to, we walked to the ground but ended up behind the Kop end, not talking obvs, that lady was literally a god send! Ended up losing 3-0, missed my cousins wedding for it in west croydon. Turned up at about 11 with programme in hand and me in tact, all palace my family, they thought it was funny i went to Liverpool instead of his big day, but how often did we get the chance to go to the mighty anfield back in the day?

I went to the Brighton 3-0 defeat on Boxing Day just after Liverpool. These two away hammering’s was where it all started to go wrong. Happy days though, and it was great while it lasted

Very similar experience a few years earlier when we played them in the Cup and drew 0-0.

Liverpool was a real s*** hole in those days.

I went there on business 4 years ago and the City Centre is ok now, but I had to visit Bootle and that is still grim.

Thanks for the tip, I will stay away from bootle town away if we get them in the cup, not sure my heart would take the same experience again.

They're fine with Palace these days. They don't even segregate the fans except at the ground. I go to the away match every year. We're united in our hatred of United.

Too right, it seems half of Ireland support Liverpool. Last time I was talking to a guy with a Palace coat on the plane, turned out he was Liverpool too. The ferry is wall to wall red.
Anfield is full of tourists, Germans, Norwegians, Japanese - strange feeling. Everton are much more the local club.
I've only had good experiences in Liverpool, I even seem to remember they allocated us extra tickets in that game we lost 9-0. Still, there was always the semi-final. I was at both of those games, those were the days.

Yes, I was at the semi final, my best day out at football I think, enjoyed it even more than the final on the saturday. Is the other half of Ireland united?

There are a good few united around. I bet with them in the pub, this season was funny. There's always some Palace if you look hard enough though. My mate worked for Churchill here when they sponsored us. They left in the end. The boss wouldn't give me a free shirt though.

Ha, it was worth a try I guess, how much is a pint in the pub over there?
