Surely, for the lads in Group B, the standard of coaching that they receive whilst out on loan could be a major factor as to how well or badly they develop?

I think the borrowing club would argue that their contribution to the players development starts and ends with giving him a far better chance of game time than he was getting with us. Something is terribly wrong with our staff if we're sending players out on loan for better coaching. It's all just for game time.

That said, if you were brought up at Man City or Barcelona or somewhere then I can imagine it might be a challenge to play for a real long ball merchant in league two. You'd think the lending club would avoid borrowing clubs who played totally differently to them (unless they wanted the player toughened up a bit), but I'm not sure we have such a definite tactical style that the way our borrowing clubs play would be baffling to our lads. They should be able to adapt and impress in league one or two if they are going to be in our team in the next year or so.

Every time someone complains that our youngsters aren't given a chance, and that we won't know what they might be capable of until they get a game for our first team, several of us pop up to rehash the same response.

The club has a pretty good idea of how good the youth lads are likely to be. Not a definitive, scientific formula to prove exact potential, but a good idea. They seem to come in three camps:

a. Good enough to play for us now.
b. Good enough to be a pro, but possibly not for Palace.
c. Not good enough to be a pro.

Most youth players are in C, then some in B, with a rare few in A. Those players must stand out like sore thumbs. Moses, Watson, Wilf, Clyne, AWB and Mitchell did not go on loan, they just played, and never came out of the first-team squad.

Most lads in group B go out on loan so that we can find out if they are good enough. Most of the time they prove that they aren't. Innis did, I expect Woods, McGregor, Kirby and Banks are doing so right now. Pierrick seemed to be rated higher than the others, but not to the point that he moved into group A. Sadly, there is no real surprise to it if he doesn't turn out to be good enough.

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised by the lad of course, but I'd expect a player who is good enough for us to stand out when on loan in a lower league, like Reece James did at Wigan. None of ours have.

Have to disagree there.... Wilf developed when we literally had no one because the club was rock bottom. He was allowed the time to improve whist being in the first team when he was particularly raw and wouldn’t have had such a chance in a better team

AWB was set to go out on loan but got his chance due to injury, he perhaps would not have got his chance

Mitchell same as above

I don’t think loaning young players with Premiership aspersions to teams below tChampionship level
is a good thing. Football is like chess you will only really improve when playing with players of a higher standard. At lower league level you get away with more mistakes and their play will get sloppy. Much better to keep them around the first team and blood them in slowly. We should have at least one youth team player on the bench for every game IMO

Very good points. Just look at the youngsters who play for England at U16. They are supposed to be the elite youngsters, they dont all go on to make a career in the pro game.

Even Jamie Smith played for England U21s..............!

I wonder how many a) category we actually have

Let's see SP and the board trying to line up for a piss in the AW toilets at half time before peddling the new stand. We're the Arthur over here and the facilities are a disgrace

Well a failed loan move doesn't always mean a failed career, the lad Debbison who scored on his debut for Sheffield at the weekend managed only two appearances at non-league Chorley in the six months prior.

I look in at the BBS most days primarily to read the "Academy" thread which like most football threads on a forum is full of people who haven't a clue what they are talking about but where there are a couple who do and whose input is worth reading.

One of them reckons that Pierrick has gone backwards in recent years and has so far failed to fulfil his early promise

Whenever I've seen him Banks looks like he has a future in the game, same as Woods. It's just at what level. Rak-Saky, Hannam and Omilabu look like hot tickets at the moment.

It's not always true that future stars always stand out on loans...for various reasons young players have ebbs and flows. Luck and opportunity also play their role. However, obviously as a general rule loans are a great way of finding out about the resilience and quality of a player away from comfort zones.

We have some exciting potential in both our 18 and 23 squads, and competition is fierce.

Does anyone know what happened to Luke Dreher? He recently came back from long term injury but hasn't been in the last two games.

His contract extension ends this year. I had high hopes for him breaking through. Here is to some better luck for him.

This does seem to happen a lot with wingers. They are very hit and miss and the position isn't always down to just skill on the ball but work rate, tracking back etc.
This has happened recently with Jason Lokilo and Lumeka and further back with Da Silva, Cadogan, Djilali and Wayne Carlisle.
I think it goes to show just how good Wilf and Vic Moses are.

To be fair Levi Lumeka played 15 games (missed a lot of the season due to a big injury) for Troyes as they won the Ligue 2 title so he'll be featuring in the French top flight next season. It feels more like we mis-used him (a common trend for Palace and youth players in recent years).

Let's also not forget that Harry Kane hardly set the world alight when he was out on loan at Leyton Orient as a youngster.
