Funny how people can have different views on the same player. I would say Nketiah is a very realistic target for Palace. Young, local to the area and possibly not quite good enough to be part of a title winning team. Like most transfers at this time of year there are a lot of dependencies for transfers to happen. In this case Arsenal are going to need to secure a player who they deem as an improvement on Nketiah. Lets say they see either Toney or Osimhen as the player to do this. Brentford would almost certainly need to secure another forward to help preserve their premier league status ( particularly with Mbeumo also out ) Who are they going to get in at short notice to fill the gap? Similarly Napoli will face the same issue if they cash in on Osimhen who is also on AFCON duty for Nigeria. In the case of Brentford let's say they they see Mateta as a player who could do the job instead of Toney? This could enable the transfers to happen if the players are happy but would Palace pull the pin as we may not necessarily be any better off by in effect replacing Mateta with Nketiah.
My only concern with Nketiah is that if you are not currently scoring that many goals with Odegaard/Saka/Martinelli in your team how are you going to go with Schlupp, Lerma and Hughes as your supply line.

Talent wise, I think you're right. Not good enough for a very top team but he would comfortably be first choice with Palace or a number of other clubs.

So my wariness about him may have no foundation at all, but he strikes me as someone that thinks he's better than what he is. I'm not sure he would be a good addition to a squad of players that doesn't have any Big Time Charlies.

I don't think Brentford will let Toney go in this window, although if Arsenal offer silly money then it could happen. More likely try to preserve their EPL place and sell in the summer.

I'd eat my hat if Brentford decided to replace Toney with JPM!

For what its worth I think Nketiah is ok. Similar in style to Edouard, but better. The issue we have is that he's overpriced and on too large a salary for his ability.

In almost all cases I'd rather we looked down or abroad vs picking a player off a top 6 club.

I have similar doubts, Neillo. In any event, we are unlikely to spend the kind of money Arsenal will want for him and with Mateta stepping up as he has done in recent games and Edouard returned from injury, a striker isn't a priority in this window whereas a proven DM to replace Doucoure is.

One relevant question:

Why are we not scoring many goals (third lowest in the PL) ?

Is it
A) Mateta and Edouard are not good enough
or
B) Haaland/Mbabbe/Kane themselves wouldn't score much given the
lack of supply from our non-existent creative midfield?

It is B) and until we rectify this with a replacement for Cabaye.

So it is ridiculous we speculate on a new No.9 until this is done.

The major concern is that he has struggled to prove he can operate as a lone striker, so unless we are going to change tactics to accommodate him will he actually fit in with us? I think he is a great finisher and is more lively than JPM or OE, but I couldn't see him holding the ball up that well. Also, given he has supposedly turned us down twice in the past it doesn't exactly suggest he would even want to join us with any real enthusiasm.

He’s one of those players who seldom passes when a better ball is on. Probably because he never glances up. A bit like Sterling in that respect. The best strikers are greedy but not exclusively.

Yes.. he would score goals for us but how many opportunities would he also squander with blocked shots, keeper saves (because the angle was never there) and blind alleys he runs into. That is an equally valid consideration when evaluating strikers.

Stale clickbait. You would think West Ham might be interested as they are relying on a 34 year old Antonio, a finished Danny Ings, an expensive flop in Cornet or Bowen playing out of position. Brentford might throw their hat in the ring if Toney leaves
With the strides Mateta has made, Nketiah would only be an expensive backup anyways and we already have one of those in Edouard

Not quite good enough I’m afraid... also he isn’t particularly physical which of course Mateta is... and he has definitely improved a lot and is now scoring goals too...the arrival of the new Manager has helped him and he’ll continue to get better...
