From the FAQs

Taxis will be able to add the drop off charge to the taxi fare as many already do when picking passengers up from the short stay car parks.

So looks like it applies to Taxis

I'm not surprised. You get loads of people sitting in the drop-off bay for ages, waiting to collect people, blocking it up, because they don't want to pay for a parking space. The attendants were powerless because other than asking nicely they had jack-all authority to move people on.

Just stick a sticker on part of your front and back number plates before you drive in and take them off once you have left. Simples.

Love it.
But genuinely what is happening?

I’ve got my season ticket and for the first time in decades I’m staying put. Luckily the weather is great and So is the fishing. Sea bass beware.

Anyone who is planning on driving to collect/drop off should take careful note:
There is now a £5 charge for just dropping off.
All roads around the airport are now double red lines and there is a fine of £100 just for stopping.
In fact one person has been fined for driving to slowly! 2 members of staff, pulled up by staff car park to get their passes out of their bags, before proceeding into the Staff car park and have also been fined.
This is run bu outside contractors on behalf of Gatwick, who seem to have completely lost the plot.
I do know of one place that could be used to briefly drop off without issue. Please pm me if you require this information

Yes that apparently is the new free drop off zone, with(at present) a free bus service. I was unaware of this facility and will endeavour to find out, if only passengers can use the free bus or whether those dropping off can also use it

About a month ago my boss decided to visit so we could go see a few customers together, he flew into Gatwick, I picked him up, didn't use the car park to save time just collected him from the arrivals lane, the visit went well, about a week later I got a letter from the parking people saying that due to covid their revenue was down & they had to find other ways to make money, my fine was reduced to £15.00 as a goodwill gesture because it was a relatively new / unknown charge / tarif - but underlining that I should have seen the signs in the approach road.

I was pretty miffed -

There was quite often police there who did move you on. Quite often pick wife up from late shift, I will meet her in the Shell garage at the North Terminal, oops did I say that

Be very interesting to see if there are any Court cases around this.

I worked at Gatwick for a while and the excuse that was always used about them not enforcing the drop-off zones in the way they should be (I can tell you some HORROR stories about the incompetence of the people who run it) was that the drop off zones in both the North and the South were actually public roads. They simply could not issue their own tickets and up until a couple of years ago had the last official Police run traffic wardens in place.

n fact, one of the main problems was HGV lorry drivers not using commercial sat navs and trying to drive through both terminals with the South, in particular, an utter nightmare because of it.

And now we get this.

Gatwick is essentially a shopping centre with a run-way attached. That is the mentality of the people who run it. You need to stop thinking of it primarily as an airport.

And like all such places, all they ever want to do is somehow stiff people who park there.

Suspect this is purely about them being desperate to somehow bump up revenue and willing to take the risk of all the tickets issued being turned over at a later stage.
