German stand up comedian Henning Vennís set including English and in colloquialisms in London and Thames estuary is pretty funny. Pretty much proves how foreigners who learn English speak better English than English people who had ignorant parents but didnít grow up on bread and dripping and little education.

My old man (a Palace fan since the 50s, he gave me a Palace programme from a 1957 match) had a similar cutting from a newspaper on our fridge. It mentioned how Dutch students didn't need to leave English grammar because they already knew it- but the English students needed to undertake a 6 week grammar course before they could then learn Latin!

We were allowed to opt out of Latin after third year, and peer pressure ('what's the point of speaking Latin?') guided me to do that. Shame, as I was quite good at it and it would have been fun 'doing a Boris' with my mates down the pub.

Ah - but as my old primary school head always said: "Everything you need to know is written in a book somewhere - therefore if you can read, you can discover anything you may need for the rest of your life"
