The problem for Blackburn is he has a sell on clause at 40% to Newcastle.( a bit like us and Zaha) I wonder if they would be interested in a Loan based on a High Loan fee plus a couple of our starlets loaned for a year with all wages paid for the year. This assumes Armstrong would like to join us when he is a free agent at end of year. If he was this would be a winwin as we get First team experience for our young players, a striker more suited to our needs without donating to Newcastle. Blackburn get 2 free loans all salary paid and don't have to pay Newcastle anything

Good post, was thinking the same thing, give them a couple of academy players but also have a fixed fee for Armstrong to pay Rovers in January.

Armstrong looks impressive and is ice cool in front of goal.

I'm not sure it works that way. I suspect the sell on clause is based on the player valuation not on how the buying club pays it.

Player worth £10m sold for cash Newcastle get £4m Blackburn £6m.

Player worth £10m part exchange Blackburn get £5m plus players still have to pay Newcastle £4m so left with £1m.

I can't see Blackburn being interested in a player swap with any club.

I don't believe the poster was suggesting a swap. Rather the idea as I read it is:
1. Blackburn loan us Armstrong until the end of his contract for a high loan fee.
2. We loan Blackburn a couple of youngsters for free
3. We pay the wages of all 3 players
4. When Armstrong's contract expires he moves to us on a free (and our youngsters come back - or possibly stay for another loan is all parties agree).
5. Blackburn don't pay anything to Newcastle because he leaves on a free.

I think that's what is meant. Not sure how legal that is vis-a-vis the league rules.

There are no good deals for Blackburn given the contract status. Only the desperate will pay what they want/think he's work. T

A loan could be a smart way of them getting out of paying the Toon but then we'd be exposed as he'd be a free agent. What would we pay for an unproven loan player who if he performs would be free to up sticks at the end of the period? Not much, I'd hope.

I don’t think that would be a safe option for us and would be absolutely of no interest to Blackburn. This guy is being quoted as having a 20m transfer fee. Even a large loan fee wouldn’t interest Blackburn and for us there’s no security in the deal. If he does well and scores a few goals then he’s still available for free and would then go to the highest payer.

Apparently, the asking price means this is a no go.

Apparently it’s reported that a fee has been agreed.

The article says we wont pay the asking price that doesn't mean that we haven't agreed a fee at a lower price?

Given the choice of Palace or Norwich if I were Armstrong I would pick Palace.

Anyway fingers crossed.

Why would we pin our hopes on Benteke... Apart from when he's playing for a new contract his scoring record is awful.

I'd like Armstrong.. The lad can clearly score goals and he would be something different rather that the 'big lad' up front which we have become so used to at Palace.

I'm certainly not pinning my hopes on him and agree with you. In fact, with a new contract signed I'm expecting him to turn rubbish again.

However, given that we've spent a bit in this window already and do have Benteke and Mateta, I just couldn't see us spending that much on another striker.

However, happily I seem to be wrong.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...
