No but we do seem to have the (quite sensible) policy of giving players a solitary cap, so they can't be nabbed later on.

I would imagine that pretty much every club tells pretty much every loanee that if they do well at the loan club it may open the door for them upon their return -

Lets face it there hardly going to tell them anything else.

Why would anyone do that just to stop them playing for another team? How would it help England or Southgate unless they have an intention of selecting them in future?

So his intention may be to keep them available for future selection but thatís not the same as preventing them playing for another national team. Itís a matter of timing. Other national teams have an advantage in that they are able to select younger less experienced players sooner without displacing far better players. By selecting these players for the easier games, Southgate is making a statement about the future selection plans. Those plans might not work out or may be very long term: the playerís development might not continue on the same trajectory; they may have a temporary dip in form; other players may appear who are better.

I could see him doing another season on loan with us. At Palace he is right in the limelight. He would never have got a callup for England from the Chelsea bench. You only get about 12 years as a top player. Far better to be playing first team football as the star of a team challenging for Europe than say 12 game a year for Chelsea surely?

Connor must be loving his life at Palace. Staying on loan keeps the door wide open to go home plus we should secure an option to buy at an agreed fee if they donít want him back.

I would have thought so - What realistically are his options if he dosent stay with us -

A slightly better club (arguably) Leicester / Everton / Spurs / Arsenal - His parent club - or another somewhere in the top 6 -
Somewhere overseas - Germany perhaps?

With every new move comes the possibility of it not working out, there is a lot to be said for staying where your wanted.

Don't get what you're arguing. Obviously getting players who have other options, committed to England is good for the future plans.

Chelsea donít need to sell him though. If he is not near their first team level (but he will be!) we may get a further loan.

The don't need to sell him, but there seams to have been a shift of policy at Chelsea of late. Guehi, Livramento and Tomori were touted for the top

Yes I think thatís pretty much my argument. Itís about lining players up to play for England when they are ready. Itís not about stopping a player playing for another national side.

The answer is c) Southgate selected Gallagher because he thinks he is a great player who will get better every game he plays. And he is right!

I donít get whatís so hard to understand. Gallagher is a quality footballer - and those hoping to keep this a closely guarded Palace secret from other teams scouts are not paying attention. Everyone in English football already knows that he is destined for bigger things and even if we had broken the bank and signed him on a permanent contract last summer (which we couldnít afford to do even then!) we would be worrying about him leaving to a bigger club next summer.

... for an even bigger fee

Hope his mate Guehi and Dougie sweet-talk him into a 3-year contract. He will still be only 24 and here he is more or less guaranteed place in starting 11. Not so at Stamford Bridge....
