So his intention may be to keep them available for future selection but that’s not the same as preventing them playing for another national team. It’s a matter of timing. Other national teams have an advantage in that they are able to select younger less experienced players sooner without displacing far better players. By selecting these players for the easier games, Southgate is making a statement about the future selection plans. Those plans might not work out or may be very long term: the player’s development might not continue on the same trajectory; they may have a temporary dip in form; other players may appear who are better.

Yes I think that’s pretty much my argument. It’s about lining players up to play for England when they are ready. It’s not about stopping a player playing for another national side.

The answer is c) Southgate selected Gallagher because he thinks he is a great player who will get better every game he plays. And he is right!
