I used to see Jimmy quite often in The Moorgate pub in the City....I worked at the NatWest bank opposite, and he owned a Travel Agency nearby. Nobody bothered him but if he was asked for an autograph, he always obliged and was always approachable.

As a player, he was simply the best at what he did.

His final game for Spurs was actually against Palace when we beat them 1-0 in the FA Cup, which was considered to be quite an upset at that time.

I was a kid in the crowd behind the goal , when Jim ,as a sixteen year old ,not only made his debut for Chelsea, but scored their goal in a 1-1 draw at Whitehart Lane,. The start of a legend., He never stopped being lethal in front of goal, and rare if ever lucky with it. One on one , your money was pretty safe with Jim.
In his biography, he tells how, he went to that game on a bus with his kit in a bag. Walking the last bit to the ground. The commissionaire , at Spurs , wouldn’t let him through the door to begin with, as he didn’t believe this little fella was likely to be playing. At the same time his dad was arguing with the club over how much he should be earning. Not certain, but I think he was on £6 a week, and his dad wanted £8 .It just goes to show it doesn’t matter how much you pay these young players now a days, you have to be born as a real genius for this game.
