Arguably the greatest English goal scorer of all time. A phenomenal goal scoring record and proud to say I saw him play when at his best.

I think I’m correct in saying that Palace are the only team that he played against and never managed scored.

This has come up before but his record is even more incredible considering some of the awful pitches he played on, the offside rule was different and defenders got away with some brutal stuff, including tackling from behind.
His partnership with Alan Gilzean was almost telepathic.

We went to a Saint n greavsey gentleman’s evening at selhurst back in the 80’s, so funny and a great tv show and double act back then.
Apparently only Messi and Ronaldo have scored more top flight goals than him.
Proper footballing legend RIP

Very quick, with or without the ball. Those legs and feet moved fast.

I'm old enough, and lucky enough, to have seen him play several times, including against Palace.

A wonderful striker. Here is a sample of his skill - deft touches, shots, dribbling. Most of the footage is poor quality but never mind.

Brace yourselves for the hollow BBC tributes.
Those hypocrites have elected to bury all pre-1992 football in favour of promoting their precious PL.
They even crown their pundit Alan Shearer EVERY time he's on as the PL's top scorer.
Would it really be that difficult to list him as 5th all-time scorer in top-flight English league football?
A mighty 74 goals behind the great Jimmy Greaves.

Thing is that games were regularly high scoring back then and defenders weren’t as good. Some players would’ve made it in any era and Greavsie is one.

I used to see Jimmy quite often in The Moorgate pub in the City....I worked at the NatWest bank opposite, and he owned a Travel Agency nearby. Nobody bothered him but if he was asked for an autograph, he always obliged and was always approachable.

As a player, he was simply the best at what he did.

His final game for Spurs was actually against Palace when we beat them 1-0 in the FA Cup, which was considered to be quite an upset at that time.

Funnily enough my dad couldn't stand him. He always moaned that he didn't get very involved in the game, just waited in the penalty area for the ball to come his way. I think it had something to do with the fact that he had an intense dislike for any London club other than Palace.

Good to see some of the photos of Greaves in the papers today though. Kits without sponsors logos and players names, big brown football boots, leather balls, muddy pitches and Greaves having a post match ciggy in the dressing room. Different game then really.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I was a kid in the crowd behind the goal , when Jim ,as a sixteen year old ,not only made his debut for Chelsea, but scored their goal in a 1-1 draw at Whitehart Lane,. The start of a legend., He never stopped being lethal in front of goal, and rare if ever lucky with it. One on one , your money was pretty safe with Jim.
In his biography, he tells how, he went to that game on a bus with his kit in a bag. Walking the last bit to the ground. The commissionaire , at Spurs , wouldn’t let him through the door to begin with, as he didn’t believe this little fella was likely to be playing. At the same time his dad was arguing with the club over how much he should be earning. Not certain, but I think he was on £6 a week, and his dad wanted £8 .It just goes to show it doesn’t matter how much you pay these young players now a days, you have to be born as a real genius for this game. God bless you Jim,RIP.

I was always a fan of Jimmy Greaves. My Late Dad's favourite player. On Saint and Greavsey he was absolutely great. I have always missed that programme. Bye bye Jimmy. A truly great player and a lovely man.
