There are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics.

Giving the impression that only 1 in 6.5 of immigrants work whilst 5.5 of them live off us is simply a lie.

Those who arrive here as dependents of others entering on work visas are also permitted to work.

Those arriving here as dependents of students will shortly be much reduced in number, but they are also permitted to work.

Those who arrive on family visas have to be supported by their sponsor who has to show they are capable of doing so before a visa is granted. They have no access to public funds and must pay an annual NHS surcharge. After some years they are permitted to work too.

They don’t all stay here, grow old and need pensions but should they do they will have paid taxes and NI like everyone else. Should they leave any contributions made will be retained by us.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to work whilst their claim is being assessed. That’s our decision, not theirs. If much delayed they can, and some do.

Those with humanitarian protection, whether from HK, Ukraine or elsewhere can work.

Those who arrive here need housing, access to medical care, education for some, public transport etc.

"no room at the inn"

If we bring in migrant workers to feed the machine, we need to plan and prepare for the extra heads. There is a huge mismatch, if we need the extra workers then have suitable infrastructure. Alternatively invest in automation and education to reduce our dependency

Why are you so keen to allow so many foreigners here?

What do you get out of it?

Agreed.

We have allowed business to pass their costs onto the taxpayer, this is the hidden cost to so called "cheap foreign labour".

If somebody is already here we have to provide the services all people need. If we import labour then the companies that are so keen to do this need to bear the real costs.

The exception to this would be the NHS which the taxpayer funds anyway.

That clearly isn't happening.

This is just one aspect. The fabric of our society is being destroyed on several levels.
The narrative of our daily lives revolves around immigrants.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

So many experts on here who have no idea what it's like to have a business that has a shortage of labour, but they castigate others!

Also, re allowing foreigners here, perhaps some are humane and care about others, I know, what an alien concept!

Do you never think there but for the grace of god....., just because you were fortunate enough to have been born here?

Whenever your name appears in the box, I know we will be treated to another pile of virtue signalling tripe.

Had you considered that some people just care more about the future for their loved ones than for the career prospects of complete strangers from abroad?

And as for labour shortages, Is there really?

Maybe businesses who pay their staff a pittance shouldn't be in business. If they paid better wages, they might get some English people to apply.

I did feel grateful to be born in this country, and one of the reasons was because it wasn't as grim as many other parts of the world. Now we are allowing those negative elements in other parts of the world to come here and reinvent it in their image.

Our heritage is being taken from us, and for what?

Ironic that, you asked a question and I gave an answer.

Also, I thought that you would be the first to reply!

Yes there are labour shortages in certain areas, but no, you know more.

When the Tories came into power, there were far fewer immigrants arriving here. How did business cope back then?
If there are shortages, it is because some businesses have survived by employing cheap labour from abroad.
Take that away and their business model collapses.

If the government made more effort to mobilise the existing labour force, then we would not have a problem. There is still unemployment in this country.

Do you own a business with a shortage of labour?

That becomes a problem when the business is say the NHS, or a care home, or a nursery - we can’t afford to just let these functions fail.

The ‘businesses who have survived by employing cheap labour from abroad’ includes nearly all public services.
