I am no fan of local councils and their employees. It's where you go to let your CV quietly die. But let's not forget they are overseen by the NAO, ombudsman and directly by Parliament

Also remember that local authorities don't have the ability to fully fund themselves and rely on central government grants that keep getting radically cut, especially if it involves a non-Conservative controlled council.

Weirdly enough it often works the other way.
I remember having a serious discussion with the Mayor and the leader of our local council.
Conservative through and through for years but under a Tory Government they got their funding cut more and more while some other marginal and Labour run councils got good funding.
Sometimes the main party help councils to garner national support but more often than not they see no point in helping nailed on wealthy Boroughs.

More evidence that the lockdowns (I agree that the first one can be argued for) and its associated paid stay home policies for millions was bad policy and in my opinion economically criminal.

OK sleepy head. Who took us down the disastrous path of Brexit, then did nothing to ameliorate the damage? Just made it worse with deals like the Australian one that is a nightmare for UK farming. Have you tried importing or exporting anything recently? And overspent madly on PPE having allowed stocks to go out of date. Have broken our education system which now relies massively on NQTs. And our NHS which canít get staff.

There is so much they have broken. Look at UK productivity. And look at both consumer confidence and trust in politicians. It truly is hard to imagine a worse performance. We are even miles behind on vaccinations despite our strong natural initial advantage

And by the way only old people can remember a Labour Government. You canít claim things would be worse, this is a completely new group of people. Itís a shame more conservative MPs arenít women, maybe theyíd be less full of testosterone and more caring. Currently 25% compared to labourís 52%.

If I thought that Labour could fix any of this, I'd vote for them

You know full well that they won't.

You cannot just fix the fall out from a pandemic and you can't just ignore what mass immigration is doing to this country, what ever the claimed benefits.

The NHS is one victim of that. It has to cater for more and more people, including an increasingly ageing population. It is also expected to cover a wider range of services. Right now we have huge numbers of ill people and despite that, nurses are striking for a ridiculous pay increase. This government has ploughed huge amounts of money to fund health care, and yet somehow they are to blame for its problems.

The current inflation crisis has nothing to do with government policy. I'm sure Labour would have already agreed to the ridiculous inflation stoking wage demands of the big unions.

The mostly Left wing media is largely responsible for this government's unpopularity.
My biggest criticism of them would be their pandering to Wokery. That said, Labour would be far worse.

Really? You think the media is left wing? Try looking at who owns and runs it. And before you scream BBC, it is run by an extremely right wing ex Whitgiftian.

In any case, the Government doesn't need the media to make it unpopular. Everyone has a reason to hate some what the Governments have been doing for at least the last 12 years, they just recently managed to build up to a dramatic crescendo in the most recent years. But hey, don't worry about all of the data available that shows we are in a far worse mess than we should be, you just carry on reading the Daily Mail.

And as for Labour would do a worse job. If so why do the Conservatives keep adopting Labour policies, but generally too late to do any good.

All governments, at all levels, of all leanings, are pretty useless. The best you can hope for is a party that will do the least governing.

An unpopular government past its sell-by date failing polices what does it do to win the next election.

It introduces popular opposition policies stealthily so that by the time of the next election there is no real need to change.

Now I've heard everything. Do you only have one eye?!?!

The Sun, Express, Telegraph, Mail, are right wing without a shadow.
Only the Guardian are a Labour supporting daily.
The I are more likely Lib Dem
The Star? Anybody's guess

So who are the droves of left-wing media driving government criticism?

Obviously you'll quote BBC, with which I, along with many, many others would disagree.

ITV?

I can't be bothered to debate with someone who still pretends that the media is not full of left wing bias.

There is no doubt that politics goes in cycles. Labour will get a shot at the title a little sooner than most thought, but then, it is not particularly surprising when consider what has happened in recent years.

I said ages ago that Sunak was a Tony Blair clone but even more slimy, and he was demonstrating that perfectly today.
He was never going to be popular, especially since Boris was the Tory golden boy of elections. Sunak was elected by elites.

With Labour being a waste of space, it seems clear that people who are not tragically wed to their pet Parties should vote Reform, especially if Farage is involved.

At least Sunak covered all the important stuff in his speech. What a leader, what a government.

I don't read the Daily Mail or any other piece of crap tabloid.

This government is clearly losing the media battle. It has been beset with infighting and instability. It has ousted an electoral winner and replaced him with people who cannot win the next election.
That is quite an achievement when the alternative is Kier Starmer.

I may well vote Reform next time, depending on whether they actually get their act together in the meantime.

I was no Boris fanboy, but whenever Sunak is public facing, he's a gaffe machine; like something out of acomedy sketch. Unable to relate in any small way to ordinary people, for me the fact he built a 400k private pool at his mansion at the same time the one in his constituancy battled to stay open says it all.
