Because the way I understand contracts in football terms is that - using Benteke as an example - when his contact ended he could have left on a ' Bosman ' free transfer. Or he could choose to sign a new contact on whatever terms were on offer from Palace. Which he did. I would be highly surprised if Palace offered Benteke a fresh deal on the same money as his previous contract.

But his contract hadn't yet expired, a new deal was agreed before the end of his contract, we will never get the truth, its like Mateta talk of him signing for St Étienne, from Mainz or from us?

The would have to offer Benteke enough to sign for the new contract if your objective was the to sell him in Jan, and try to recoup some money
