You look where Villa and Everton are despite spending more than most teams not only in the PL but in the whole of Europe and it shows you just how hard it is to succeed in the PL. We are currently punching above our weight just to be in the position we're in now let alone higher, which I would say is largely due to having a stable leadership who seem to make the right decisions at the right times. Dougie, despite all the stick he has received, has also proven to be an excellent recruiter of top talent.

I love our club at the moment. We have a fan in charge, an exciting young manager and squad and we continue to act as a family club in the main, supporting local causes and investing in the development of young players, not just for our benefit but theirs. We are getting plaudits for the right reasons and other fans are starting to point at our club and say "I wish our club was run like Palace." With our resources we are always going to put avoiding relegation at the top of the list, but if Parish continues to run the ship as he has with long-term goals then I have every faith we'll remain competitive in the PL.

Great post TL!

Brilliant, well articulated and spot on (although I realise my endorsement may be reason to worry).

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Yes indeed!!

But I also fear relegation every season, whether rational or not. Disappointment is in our genetics which makes success all the sweeter.

And I would rather be that than say an over-expectant Manure or Arse fan who demand a repeat of their early glories and feel cheated if they are not champions of everything.

I am still inclined to recognise this attitude as a hallmark of a 'true Palace fan'.

Me too, I think they call it ‘murphy’s law’ whatever can go wrong, will go wrong!!

Or Jerry Murphy’s law in our case

yip. Spot on.

And whilst we are not yet mathematically safe. We are picking up points and moving in the right direction.

Brentford Leeds and Everton are the ones who need to be worried. All dropping like stones.

And Burley have a winnable fixture tomorrow night, that could see Everton drop into the bottom 3.

Very true Mr.Robbo, as stated by myself and a few others on here, I would also suggest that cautious optimism could be viewed not only through results, league position and fixtures (albeit they're obvs. most important) but also through the bigger picture of where we seem to be as a club and a team in comparison to those below and around us.

When supporting Palace in the PL for me its all about how quickly we can get to 38 points (or 36 points these days) to virtually guarantee PL safety -

Often combined with a satisfying observation & being able to identify that at least 3 other clubs have bigger problems than ours.

I have no idea how long it will be (if ever) that I will take PL survival as a "given" seeing as how we often witness the changing fortunes of clubs around us, up one season & struggling the next.

I would settle for finishing 10th to 15th every season as long as we carry on playing entertaining football. The occasional cup run would be even better.

I think the issue with the table this year is the discrepancy in the Games Played column.

If you take worse Case scenario, and all below us take maximum points from their games in hand over us, (I have not the time for due diligence and double checking who's playing who), then on the surface we are in a much more precarious position. Everton, newcastle, Leicester and Villa would leapfrog us, Burnley would too, if they sufficiently increase The GD enough, so Worst case is we'd be 15th, and 6 points clear of the Relegation zone, with 11 to Play.

This is obviously not going to happen, but I do look at That column and think that our league position is a falsehood.

still not going down though.

Nor me but a cursory glance at fixtures during March reveal at least 3 head-to-heads between the teams below us playing mid-week games their so-called games in hand. In other words the worst case scenario can't mathematically happen.
