Profit - ah yes, that dirty word, that awful thing, the taxation on which pays for our public services.

I don't think you can put the P&O management team and the word profit into the same sentence.

I used to know DP World quite well, I was a supplier to them & knew quite a few of the senior management well enough to know that their opinion of the company as an employer was favourable, they were good people to work for, clearly things can change over time & circumstance but my view of this (without being privy to the facts) would be that DPW will have tried to settle this as amicably as possible at least initially - now whether union involvement, business circumstances (Brexit / Covid- who knows what) has meant that a more robust position has been adopted your guess is as good as mine, but a company that loses £100 million a year needs something to change or its unsustainable.

In 2020 - the last filed accounts - it made £68.4m EBITDA. I guess the question would be what would the future hold, would it return to profit. I assume Brexit will have reduced its revenue last year as well as COVID. But we are told the Brexit effect is now reducing and trade recovering so I don't see why 2021 would be anything other than a blip.

Maybe P&O is using last year's results as an excuse to do what it had been wanting to do for a while...

Also, annual results can be worked upon to make them look better or worse, I suspect the worst possible scenario was put forward.

It's nothing to do with the Conservatives, nor indeed with any current or previous UK government. As someone else has pointed out, the ferry company is based in Dubai. The contracts of employment are with a company registered in Jersey - typical arrangements in the maritime industry according to Simon Calder, the travel correspondent for The Independent.

Perhaps YT, but getting rid of workers rights, the right to picket with no more than 6 people is dopwn to the CONS, so are zero hours contracts, gig economy and numerous other things that make the low paids life hard.

How they were sacked is out of order, but thats the free market and capitalism in full effect.
We do have weak employment rights in the UK, but thats because the electorate vote for them. Nothing will happen to P&O and whats 800 men out of work to the government?

Yes, bang on Kev, they may be out of work, not making rent or mortgage, a tad chilly in home with overcoats on, little hungry after beans on toast yet again, scared to open the mail or knock at door as debt collectors aren"t friendly, but, at least they have democracy!

Actually this is nothing to do with workers rights being watered down it wouldn't have made a difference.

According to the BBC and the government P&O have almost certainly broken employment laws so this will end up in the courts and they will lose. It doesn't matter what laws you have if an unscrupulousness employer breaks them it's for the courts to decide.

P&O's reputation will be destroyed over this and quite rightly.

One final point CP, if the employment laws are so bad why didn't Tony Blair change them?

There's of course no need to pick up on someones thread Re spelling, punctuation etc
Of course I knew what I was talking about, the fact that it probably may of not read well was my mistake & I will try harder in future.

He wasn't. He was pointing out extremely light weight thinking.

You were rude just apologise, a thought that would go far with many posters on this site.

It seems here many will fire off insults until they get a yellow card, and then because they can't trust themselves don't post for a month.

Tony Blair left office 15 years ago!!
In the last 10 years there have been numerous laws passed to weaken UK employment protection, in support of the 'free market' which means giving employers more powers to do what they want. Its what people voted for.

Exactly what did the Romans do for employment law?
