Entirely agree with southnorwoodhill. Nothing from the bench. Mitchell was well off the pace and Luka was just abysmal. Ayew irrelevant. Fortune favours the brave and if you end up with as many attackers on the pitch as Brentford did, a goal is what you deserve. We were in a bunker mentality from the minute our subs came on. As Zaha asked, why not go for the second goal? The game was becoming stretched and there was every possibility we'd score again. Vieira did a Hodgson. Was the idea that Luka and Doucoure would just sew it up? Otherwise: Mateta had a shocker, Olise took a long time to get going but eventually caused a lot of problems. For me, the real success was Doucoure: didn't miss a tackle all night and only one pass didn't go where he meant it to. We really should beat Brentford at home if we want to claim progress.

Naturally they make the changes to see if they can affect the state of play and Vieira complies by making changes of his own which gave them the onus to fully control the ball. Once we started to sit back we gave them the opportunity to get closer to our goal; instead of competing the ball in the middle of the park or further up we turned it over to them, and they made use of our generosity. They will feel they should have had all 3 points at the end, so egregious was our play. I totally agree.

A similar thing happened for Liverpool's second goal against us at home last year. Andersen left a man to go towards the ball, meaning both Guehi and Mitchell had to place themselves at midpoints between three forwards, rather than marking one forward each. A good crosser can pick out his man when that happens.

Whatever misgivings about the equaliser they should have had two more goals as a result of Vieira electing to play to their strengths and our weaknesses for the last fifteen minutes. The criticism of Guaita is way off the mark and if he hadn't made an excellent point blank save at the death we'd have got nothing. In the bullsh!t world of the Premier League too many overthink tactics and the whole idea of making five subs in a tight game with a squad as lacking in depth as ours is pathetic.

There seem to be two different schools of thought. One being attack is the best form of defence. The second is our management philosophy of fear the worst and defend at all costs. Personally alongside Wilf I back the attack model. I’m a risk taker and believe we would have been the team scoring the second then hitting the bar if we had stayed in attack mode. It appears falling back and bringing on defensive bodies to shut up shop late in the game clearly doesn’t work. It must be at least 6 times now this tactic has let us down.
