Like others,I am not sure what to make of the season so far.

Draws at Anfield and St.James Park ( which now looks a good result), playing West Ham off the park and doing the same to Southampton in the first half were all plusses. Three of our defeats have been against top sides - Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City.

However, we have seen some dross as well - Everton, Leicester and Forest. And, as pointed out elsewhere, our victories against Leeds and Wolves weren't that convincing.

There seem to be various issues with the squad and our style of play. Amongst them being, no proven and reliable striker, a weak midfield, our slow build up from defence, talented players but whom lack a bit of steel, poor finishing ( which harks back to the first issue)....

Actually 19 points at this stage is not too bad. And the addition of couple of new faces to the squad in the appropriate positions could make all the difference. But, unless that happens in the January window, I really don't see us nosing into the top 10 let alone top 6.

Totally agree with most of the posts. Difficult to assess the season so far but we are short of anywhere near the top six.

On the plus side our home form is better. Look harder to beat at home than last season and very unlucky to have lost against Chelsea too. But generally, the away form has been poorer than the last campaign. A good win and played well against West Ham but let's face it they didn't turn up that day. The Forest result was really poor and lost all momentum going into the break.

Agree lack of investment in the Summer has caught up with us in places and at least a couple of players in January would be very helpful.

Got to be beating teams like forest in the form they're in. Win on Saturday and we'd have been 7th right??

Ok not likely but stranger things have happened. Look at the table!
Top 4 a stretch too far and a shame the break is starting when we are in great form.

Palace will never reach the heights of 91 when we finished 3rd or even todays equivalent in this world of billionaire owned clubs (5th or 6th) until we cut out the silly defeats against the teams we should beat such as Forest on Saturday. We find some lovely form and completely outplay West Ham in their own back yard (even Moyes admitting Palace deserved the win) and then go and deliver a limp underwhelming performance against Forest.
This has been the typical Palace I have always known. Consistency seems to be as alien to Palace as a days work to a scouser

No game can be taken for granted. The best that one can do is prepare thoroughly and play to one's full potential. I'm looking at Vieira's team selection and the performance of the players, and I'm suspecting complacency.

Does there have to be a point?

Winning a cup would be good, after all the Zenith Data Systems one was a long while ago, but for me, that would be the icing on the cake of following Palace.

Is it so wrong to enjoy football match by match, for it's own sake - hard I know when we play like we sometimes do, but that's counterbalanced by those amazing games when we go (usually) 'oop north' and come home rejoicing with 3 points in the bag that no-one expected, having played them off the park.

It's enough for me.....

And for me Becky. When you've followed Palace for half a century you just appreciate being in the top league and playing and even beating some of the top teams in Europe if not the world much to the pundits' shock and horror. Yes, it would be nice to win a trophy and we got very close in 2016, but simply being up there with the best is magic. Since we've been back in the PL, we have beaten ALL of the big six teams at least twice. We're a smallish club that has spent the majority of its existence in the lower leagues but are now punching above our weight. What's not to like?

Good points - I've been going since 1964 so fully appreciate our current standing.

On my reckoning our wins against the "big six" are:

Man City 3
Man Utd 3
Chelsea 4
Liverpool 4
Spurs 2 (+2 in the cup)
Arsenal 3

That's why I said at least 2 (rather than 3) because we've only beaten them twice in the league. Spurs are the only big 6 team we haven't beaten in the league both home and away since the start of our current spell in the PL - just the 2 home wins but we did, of course, beat then away in our cup run to the 2016 final.

I think we are seeing some ' levelling up ' in the Premier League this season.

Aside from Arsenal's emergence at the top, the other big clubs are finding consistency hard to come by.

At the other end of the table there are no obvious whipping boys.

So a run of wins or defeats can significantly affect league positions.

I think Palace are around about where I would expect them to be, but I do think the club need to go into the market in January otherwise we could be in for a tough second half to the season.

I don't have any tears for the big teams, but the teams in Europe have had a mad schedule this season due to the WC. West Ham have had a particularly gruelling schedule. If we were ever going to sneak a European place it feels like this season would be the one, but I think the majority of us probably agree we're not good enough as it stands so would require a lot of luck. I still think 12-16 is our most likely finishing spot.

I agree TL however I would go slightly bonkers and suggest 10-16th!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Easy now, don't start raising expectations.
